My gauge is farily accurate. Actually from what ive gathered so far the needle drops faster on the top half of the tank, than it does on the bottom half.

I still do the maths like most of yous anyway. i work on around 7L/100km which means my tank (of approx 40L) should get me around the 500km mark.

around town its worse (now with the new weber its even a bit thirstier), on the highway though she runs on the smell of an oily rag.

However, regardless of how many ks i've done i always put fuel in when the needle gets just below the last white line.

If you keep track of how far you've driven each time you fill the tank you should be able to guess when you're about to run out of gas.
It's obviously easier if you have a trip odometer.
I quickly do the math each time I fill up. I know that I'm getting about 32-34mpg. So with a 10.5gal tank (sedan) I would expect to run out of gas at around the 330 mark.
I usually fill up at around 270miles and put in 8-9 gallons. And by "fill up" I mean to the rim

I just know that the only accurate fuel gauge I ever experienced in a datsun was in a 81 datsun 210 we had for a while

I think fuel gauges are a bit in accurate by nature, watching the mileage is the only way i figure when to get gas anymore, LPG gauges seem to be really sketchy, all I know is when i get into red it means i've used 5.7 gallons and i may have up to 1.5 gallons in reserve at that point.
