Correct, but in a 1200, there are better choices that are readily available at affordable pricing.

Don't knock the old J series, they still move the cars around fairly well, If you dont want to mod any of the old 60's model bluebird 1200's, and keep them granny spec, they're the way to go. Still cant beat the reliability of an A series though

The older J series engines were derived from the engine used in the Austin A40 from the early 50's In fact it's all but an exact copy, but with the relibility & oil leak problems engineered out & some improved performance engineered in. None the less, it's a 1940's design & the A series engine is a quantum step forward in compactness, weight reduction, efficiency & performance.
There is not one single part that I know of that is interchangeable between the older J series engines & the A series engines. Nothing, ... & fitting a J series to a 1200 would be a retrograde step.

Thanks for the info.
Do you mean that none of the parts in the J series are interchangable with the A series?
What gearbox/s should I be looking for or is this idea of putting a J15 in a 1200 a waste of time?

J-series engine is the most similar to A-series, the biggest visual difference is that the head is iron instead of aluminum. It is an older design, and none of the parts are the same.
The gearbox bolt pattern (bellhousing) is different.

So it appears to be mistaken Identity on the part of the seller or it really was in a sunny as part of a conversion that didn't workout....
I'll wait and see if any of the other chaps will know about the gearbox issue. Thanks for your help.

J15 was never in a Sunny.
It was in the Datsun 1500 Ute that kinda looked like a Datsun 1600 but a bit more 1967.
Not sure about gearbox swaps, I know that the J and A series are similar in appearance. One of the fellas will know more.

After giving it a bit of wipe, I struck gold:
J15 955987
I'm guessing there is a difference between the J and the A? I'm also guessing that the 56A gearbox I have now on the 1200 won't fit the J engine? This changes everything, even the ute crossmember I have!

It will be an A12 or A14, and those numbers are casting numbers, not engine numbers or head numbers.. Keep looking for the engine number.
I believe you should look around on the side where the distributor is.
