the exhaust manifold looks from what u can see of it like the GX style, it swoops lower and longer.

I would agree with you on the fact that bieng a genuine 1200gx donk does make it more intresting. I had to sell my 1k ute cause it was a rusted out POS, and too much of a basketcase for me, and i am still upset about it, but on the flipside I have my Daisy, so the world is right again.

Sounds like a reasonable deal for someone.

The engine number is of no help at all.
I'm prepared to wager that this is the real deal 1200 GX engine, not just a head plonked on a stock block & these are quite desirable in completely stock trim. The Webers are, .... for me, an abomination on this particular engine.

I ran a big bore 1200 GX in my 1000 sedan for well over a decade & for street duty they are the sweetest thing around. Those Hitachi's, when in good serviceable condition, provide flexibility, ecomomy & right peppy performance.
I absolutely loved mine.

Cheers mate

Having second thoughts about letting it go now

Would the engine help to confirm if it is a full GX engine or just top end, if so then it is A12741954

Thanks for all the info so far, hard to find anyone that knows much about these things

Thanks mate. You see that little metal plug in the middle of the head, right down near the gasket line? It's partly covered by No. 2 spark plug wire.
That's to plug the drilling that carries the oil from the block to the rockers & is unique to the A10 & 1200 engines as they simplified the oil passages from 1974 onward.

The double valve springs confirm it.
This is a 1200 GX cylinder head.

It's possible that somebody bought a whole 1200 GX engine & fitted it, or the top end of one & fitted it to a stock 1200 block.
If it's a whole GX engine, then the original GX fuel pump is gone [slightly higher fuel pressure] & the GX distributor has a different advance curve while the GX cam is a little more 'sporty'. Most GX models had flat top pistons, so pull a plug & with a small dimeter torch have a look at one piston when close to TDC. [probably best done at night or in a dark shed]
If it's a flat top then it's a whole GX engine, if it's dished, then it 'might' be a GX engine, then again, might not.

That should perk up some interest in your ute.

EDIT
Another clue. Have a look at the fitting on the water inlet pipe on the block. If it looks factory, [& I think it is] then it's most likely to be a whole 1200 GX engine as this was unique to the GX & is essential to allow proper manifold heating.

Cheers for the info mate

I just went off the rego papers which say 69 model but if the numbers tell you its a 68 then thats what it is

Not sure on the head, i know it has oval ports and double valve springs, i think it could be A14/15 as it has the water ports under the inlet ports for heated manifold and i had to use a A15 intake gasket when i put the webbers on...if that helps

Here is a shot of the spark plug side of the head, what can ya tell me

Cheers
Small point, but my parts book says that with a chassis number of B20-034420 it's a 1968 model.

Introduced in December of 1967 & made untill September of 1968, ... up to chassis number B20-040000 [for RHD models]
It looks to have the correct grille & headlight rims but a passenger model emblem in the grille.

If it's a sound bodyshell, is registered & runs well, then the price is not unreasonable at all in my view, particularly with the GX induction as it is lower in price & a much better street induction than the Weber setup on a basically stock engine.

What's the cylinder head, A14/15 or GX? [a view from the spark plug side would help with ID.]
