The reason buyers like Paypal is that the sellers pay for it not the buyers.

What I have heard though is that the penalty for being caught selling an item without paypal was the seller has to pay twice the items' selling price. That sounds pretty crap and there's still heaps of non paypallers out there so mabey it was only a proposed penalty?

I seem to remember that eBay's proposal was for PayPal or cash on pickup to be the only acceptable methods of payment.

I also thought that PayPal was originally a seperate operation from eBay but that eBay bought it & from then on they have tried to use it to parasite every cent they could get from everyone possible.

Yeah that's right I buy and sell on eBay every week and from mid May to mid June there was a string of messages about how they were going to introduce paypal only but it never went ahead, obviously due to the ACCC intervention.
Personally I think it would spell the end of eBay for buying carparts and the like. I try to only use it when buying overseas.

Andy I said Ebay introduced a policy that we can only use Paypal, as a seller I got messages everyday from Ebay explaining how great it was so I know its true, they have never notified me to say that this is no longer their policy, the only reason it isnt enforced right now is the problems they are having getting it past the ACCC.

Hate to sound harsh. But thats crap you only have to have paypal as a payment option. Its not the only payment method. You can still use other methods like bank deposit i do it as a seller and a buyer.]

I am sure any regular sellers on Australian Ebay who know what they are talking about will be able to verify that I am talking the truth not "crap". The only reason you can still do that is because of intervention by the ACCC.

Below is the current state of play.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has rejected eBay's proposal to make PayPal the only accepted payment method, arguing that eBay's claims of increased security don't outweigh the disadvantages of reduced competition. As ACCC head Graeme Samuel put it:

The ACCC believes that consumers are in the best position to decide which payment method is most suitable for them. The notified conduct denies them that choice. Accordingly, the ACCC considers that these benefits do not outweigh the anti-competitive effects of the conduct.

eBay is allowed to appeal the decision, so we're not quite at the end of the process, but the original plan to make PayPal compulsory from June 17 now looks like a no-go.

Quite right DD but Visa and Mastercard dont force you to use their cards whenever you want to buy or sell something do they?

Here in Australia (lucky us) Ebay introduced a policy that the only payment acceptable on an Ebay auction IS Paypal, you dont have a choice, if you dont want to use Paypal you cant use Ebay, direct deposits, cheques, money orders, and non Paypal payment sites are forbidden.

This is ebays test market if they can get us to swallow this load of bull sh!t then the rest of the world is next.

Paypal is a useful tool and I dont mind paying to use it but I dont like being forced to use (and pay for it) against my will.

Fortunately our Australian competition and consumer commission is doing battle with Ebay over the legality of this as it is a blatant breech of trade practices.

Read all about it here.
