I know that they pushed the "Petrol Wowser" theme & I still have new showroom posters with "120Y, the petrol wowser" text on them. I don't remember the jingle though.
I do remember the line, " New Datsun ?????, it's got the lot" but I think [but don't know] it was for either the 1000 or 1200 model.

actually if anyone can remember the advertising music/jingle for the 120Y it sang about having a lot of standard features, so they must have been mainly deluxes. "datsun 120 whyyyy? witha whole lot more, than a ?? what u pay for.. datsun 120 whyyyy?" something like that, give me a break its 30 years ago.

Interesting that in the North American book it says they the letter 'L' combined with the letter 'U' further along in the string [L-U] is for US & Canadian models. In reality, the letter 'L' is for 'left drive' while the letter 'U' is for vehicles destined for North America in the same way that 'X' is for Aussie spec models.
Left drive models, all of which carried the 'L' code were sold into many other countries as well, so what the book says is not 'untrue' but not entirely accurate either.
My book says "The unit & car numbers are stamped & registered at the factory. The engine & car identification numbers are used on legal documents. These numbers are used for factory communications such as Technical Report, Warranty Claims, Service Journal & other information."
The only image that I have that relates to my stepfathers Datsun dealership is on a colour slide [transparency] & it shows a white 1200 coupe [like I drive now] in the showroom. He was a half owner of D&G motors in Blacktown [Daniels & Grimshaw] & he was the 'D' part.

haha thats cool as. Mats versus carpet aye. I would love to go back the the 60's and 70's for a while to experience all the olds cars as new. I heard that 120ys were good sellers. They were about $2000 wern't they? My dad bought a 1975 Kombi Van brand new, and that cost $5500. I know that in the very late 60's my day was earning $40 a week as a qualified plumber.
I also found out that worldwide about 2.55 million 120ys were sold.
Do you still have any photos of the old dealership back in the day?

Yes, Dodgeman is spot on. To add the GL code, it is suffix -G. Not shown on the following, since we didn't get any GL in north america: Nissan Chassis Codes I don't think these codes are found anywhere on the car. Most B210s are Deluxe, only a few were Standard which had no carpet (only mats) and some other poverty features.

Alright, alright, now ya made me go & get my factory workshop manual. This has an explanation of the model codes.
This code applies to Aussie spec, but Japan produced model B210/120Y cars.
The sample code in the book goes like this. ... K B 2 1 0 S T R X ..... & this is the breakdown
K= Coupe model V= Van model. No character= Sedan model.
B210= Car model.
S= Standard model. No character= DeLuxe model.
T. In this position, A= Auto trans, No character= Manual Trans T=Floor shift control [I assume that T= floor shift auto.]
R= Two door.
X= Destined for Australia.
I do not have the separate book for the Aussie assembled sedans from July 1976, so the code here is unknown to me.
I hope that this helps.
Knowledge? Nah, not really, but I'm old enough to remember my stepfather selling 1000's new from his Datsun dealership. I was 24 when the first of the 120Y's were new & I worked not far from CapMo. They had about a half mile [well it felt like it] street frontage onto Parramatta Rd & what must have been a zillion cars on the lot. I remember the cars well as the low cost 120Y was a big seller & plenty were kept on hand at all times.
The only thing, knowledgewise, that I really need is a passable memory, & the knowledge of where to find my factory manuals, handbooks, owners manuals, advertising literature, brochures & accessory brochures. With these, anybody can be a bloody expert.

Again, the vinyl top was not a factory fitting in Australia, however some were fitted onto cars in the NSW distributor's showroom models. Capitol Motors often tarted up some showroom stock & this would normally be done on the better models, but for the life of me, I don't know what the nice model was called in the 120Y range.
I do not know if Vinyl tops were fitted to cars by distributors in other states but it's very unlikely that they were done at a dealer level in rural areas. If a vinyl top was specifically ordered by a rural new car purchaser, the top would be added to a new car in Sydney which would then be sent off to the dealer. These tops were made to Capitol Motors specs & were not factory items.
I have one of these tops on my 1000 coupe & it looks better styled than the factory KB10 offering as did most of the tops done by CapMo.
