I used to have a Walkman set up in my car. I started out with an 1/8" stereo to RCA adapter into an amp as mentioned before.
To solve the battery issue, I made a simple voltage regulator to replace the batteries. I used a CB mic cord (5 leads) to connect the walkman. 3 leads for the sound and 2 for power. I installed an 1/8" jack at the end and pulled the 2 extra wire out the top and down the side of the radio into the battery cover. The other end ran under the seat to the voltage regulator and amp connections.
Worked great. The radio reception sucks though. I'm sure there is a way to plug in an mp3 player in a similar fashion.
Or, you could try one of these...
SecretAudio
I think its a bit expensive.

+1

my dash is clean and unmelested, cept for the cracked dash pad, even got the datsun blanking plate . so im too scared to chop mine.. i might change the colours, but no chopy chop!!!

my first idea was too remove the face from a din sized Scan Disc, MP3/WMA player and remote mounting the face in the ash tray (so you push the top and it folds out) but its too long to fit there.. and was gunna hide the rest of it where the radio normaly sits.

but as sead before just use a mp3/ipod and run it through a small two chanel amp (used a ear phone jac too dual rca lead), works well, i did it in my dunnydore for awhile.. but it when through batterys like no tomorrow... so you need to suply power some how!!??

To jake. Why not cut a section out of that front seat rail and box it up for your stereo if its reinforced and strengthened it shouldn't be an issue. There pretty flimsy any way.
Just a thought
