excessive guide clearance?
were the guides replaced or klines fitted
reamed to size or honed?
klines hate rough finish on valve stems
is it smoking?

I've adjusted and readjusted the valve clearance numerous times and that noise is still there. The head is the same as was on it before, just new guides, a regrind on the seats and resurfacing were done to it. The cam is stock.....I didn't touch the bottom end.

I plan on rechecking valve clearances and removing the valve springs this weekend to see what it all looks like.

tight end of spring is heavier.we dont want the moving end heavy do we? closer coils at one end also increase spring RATE as the spring is compressed

are the tappets adjusted correctly?
has there been a head or cam change?

Thanks for the replies! So, assuming that the tighter coil end should be installed towards the head, would installing them any other way create a noise issue?

Ever since getting a valve job done a month or two ago there has been a noise in the valvetrain that I haven't been able to figure out. It moves with RPM's, so that is why I figured it might be the valve springs.

Hiya Guy's,
yes we can supply double springs,
GX spec and 10k rpm ones...
the seats, collets and retainers to suit,
Billet rocker spacers, and Tomei pushrods...

all the fruit...

Pm for details.. :)

ps I've always installed the springs, tighter coild towards the head.. for the same reason as mentioned....

Mmmm, we've always installed them with the "coils closer together" against the head, ie. the bottom. The coils being closer means that that end of the spring would be heavier, so that you're now moving more weight with the tappet, with obvious negative consequences. Also the reason for these types of springs are, that they become progressively stiffer as they compact with the less denser coils compacting first and then the dense ones.

On other cars there are sometimes paint marks on the one end of the spring, with no difference in the coil density, and these paint marks are always against the head when you strip. So we tend to reinstall them the way they came out, but if there's no markings or obvious differences in the coil density on either end, then it shouldn't make a difference which way they go in..

Yeah, I just installed double valve springs & the tight end goes down!
But, being just a spring, it would not matter anyway. the same spring rate will still apply, I am pretty sure.
