You should be able to manage then. But I found the 63, considerably more difficult to do that a 60. If you're a pro, it shouldn't be beyond you.

yeah forgot to mention im a mechanic, and have stripped down a 60 series box so i should be ok with the 63, if not i can get access to a workshop manual.
pigdog by sss box you mean the dogleg a series box i have?
both of the boxes look identical, but its still in the car so ill leave my investigating until i get it out. so it could very well be just a random nissan box that looks like the 63 ive got.

as b310gx said, there isnt a 63a normal pattern stumpy box
so the one in the stanza would be a r30 stumpy, there isnt that much of a difference between the stanza box and the r30 box in size...unless they are sitting next to each other then its kinda obvious

would be best off just putting new bearings in the sss box, its not that hard to do

Also, there is a reasonable amount of disassembly required to get the front input shaft out of the gearbox. You can't just pull the front bell housing off, tap out the roll pin from the selector fork and pull it off. The gear on the cluster overhangs the top of the input shaft (over the gear that the selector ring engages with) which prevents you from pulling it off the end of the main shaft. You'll likely need to remove the tail housing, and dismantle ALL the gears from the main shaft. Then take the circlip off the main shaft. (I can't recall off the top of my head if thats under a plate screwed to the center plate, or if that plate is on the top side of the center plate) Anyway you must remove the circlip from the mainshaft on the rear side of the center bearing, then you've got to drive the rear of the mainshaft forwards far enough to enable the removal of the cluster before you''ll be able to get the input shaft out.
Not a big deal if you've had some experience with gearboxes, but not a 5 minute job for a novice.

yeah thats what i have been trying to say rev head. i have a 63 series 5 speed(dogleg pattern) a series box in the car at the moment, and i have a normal pattern (selects all 5 forward gears and has the 5 speed gearknob) in a stanza down the back.
if the spigots are different sizes, cant i just change the input shafts over? as well as the a series front housing onto the stanza normal h pattern rear housing and gears.
my basic reconing is to just swap the front housings over, ill do it over christmas and do some stuffing round and rebuilding and report on what i find.
paul ill whip the stanza box out before the hillclimb and do some measuring im sure its a 63 not a 71, because its too small to be a 71
thanks everybody for your help

The 63A 'A' series bell housing is unique to the A series and it is the same box as the 63A 'L' series. It is just a different bell housing. Do you have a 63 behind your A series now? If so, same same.

The really tricky part is that there's nothing to hold it by. The only bit that could be held in a lathe chuck is the taper upon which the synchro blocker ring runs on. He had to machine a female taper to wedge the input shaft into to hold it. It was pretty tricky. I would have just used my old one, but it was a bit ratty. I stil have to old one. It's pretty handy for getting the clutch plate lined up perfectly.

Woodie, I dont think there was a 63A 5 speed that wasn't a dogleg box. All the normal boxes were the 71a's, with 71 mm's between the shafts. Are you sure this isn't a normal 4 speed with worn shifters so it'll slip into the 5 position & there wasn't anything there, like some 56a 4 speeds. Even the 63a 5 speed in the 200B coupe was a dogleg box. Check the case for the number on the side, or whether the output shaft will turn when you put the shifter into the 5th position. & if you want to go to a normal shift pattern, my racing partner has a normal pattern 5 speed 60a, maybe he'll be open to a swap. We'll be pit crewing at the Australian championships, so maybe we could have a chat then. Paul.

thats what i was thinking sean, the box is setup in the coupe already im just toying with the idea of a regular shift patern, instead of the dogleg.
well it works in my head so ill give it a shot over the christmas break. the dogleg box needs a rebuild anyway
