actually if they are under 13s then they probably are 60 or 75 series landcruiser calipers

had a look through the DBA catalouge for rear vented discs around 250-260ish mm
figured rears would be good to look for as most fronts will probably have troublefitting over the end of the axle and this is what i ended up with

Audi
s3 & tt 00 - 02
256x22 36.5

S4 99-04
256x22 48

Ford
Cougar 99-on
253x20 43.5

mondeo 95-on
253x20 44

Mazda
RX7 series 3 83-86
257x20 63

Mitsubishi

Magna TS/KS Verada V6 Sedan ABS 3/94-on
266x18 66.5

Starion 5/82 - 8/87
247x18 47.5

Nissan
180SX (CA)
250x18 49 front disc

Subaru
Impreza / WRX / Sti 99-00
266x18 67.5

Liberty RS Turbo EJ20 2.0L Turbo 90-93
266x18 67.5

Toyota
MR2 SW20 90-95
263x16 45

MR2 ZZW30R 99-on
263x16 41.5

VW
Beetle limited 00
Bora V6 4WD ??
Passat 4MOTION 1ZC/1LE 01-on
DBA800 256x22 36.7

sizes are diameter x thickness and offset from face to back of dsc

included S13 fronts as a referance as they should fit on the rear if you machine the end of the axle down....so thats kinda a starting point if you can find any of those discs second hand to test

I want to say the GSL-SE RX7 had ventilated rears but not sure because it's been a while. Now early Mazda Miata / MX5 uses 14 inch wheels and vented rear rotors..............here in the states the cars and parts are way cheap. I've seen guys use motorcycle vented rotors and calipers on the rear.

Yep - they have to be ventilated. we are already running decent size ones so theres no point sticking with solid.

The other thing is that i have to get them to fit inside a 13" wheel - cant do 15.

I think you are right - its an 80 series (not sure where 85 came from). Regarding the rotors, we will find something close & then simply machine them down till they fir - its a pain cause we cant simply replace them but it works well within all the constraints we have.

The thing is, I have 3 sets of 13" wheels already, 16 tyres for them & for every inch i got up in diameter, the cost of tyres essentially goes up $80 - 100 which pretty much doubles the cost of each tyre.

We managed to get the Landies in under the 13" rim, if i machine a rotor surely the r31 calipers will fit?

What about rx7 calipers - people also seem to recommend them. Are the rears ventilated?

right, just noticed you said you want vented ones

no ####ing around then, r32/33 rear brakes all the way

basically use r31 caliper bracket, modify it to fit the diff as i said
then you need to make up a dogbone type adaptor bracket to bolt to the r31 caliper bracket so that you can run r32 calipers
redrill the r32 disc to 4 stud and ever so slightly enlarge th centre hole in the disc

will have to run 15s(any only certain mags will fit)

you say 85 series calipers? im sure you either mean 75 series or 80 series

what size is the disc that you are running on the front? coz if its the 255mm camry discs then the skyline rear will probably be a little big....so might as well go skyline front as well

heres some inspiration pics

and one of what you could have at the front

im running rear bluebird brakes, was very easy to put on like pigdog said, the trx i got them off pulled up very well with a worked 2.0............ should be plenty of series 3 or trxs around the wreaking yards, however not many like to split the diff as i found out.

Yep I am running an 85 series 4 spot calipers with a camry slotted and ventilated rotor which has been machined down until it fit so maximise the size.

We currently run a bias valve which is a bit crude but seems to work well.

We are getting pretty quick now & under pressure the back in now beginning to skip around but also - smoke is bellowing out so they are working hard, just not hard enough - especially as we are building up an FJ20 turbo engine to replace the FJ20 n/a.

How much would the r31 calipers cost as opposed to the bluebird?

Are you suggesting that if we go hydraulic hand break, then using commodore calipers in lieu of r31 would be the go? What model commodore & what ventilated rotors would you suggest?

and idea on what discs its using at the moment?
and you have landcruiser front brakes?

1500 ute diff is a h190 and they can run all the same brakes as h165

havnt tested both brake setups personally so cant really say which would be best, but i assume it would be the bluebird brakes as they run a 280mm disc as opposed to a 260mm that the r31 runs

the brakes i used to have on my car were 60 series front calipers and a 255mm disc with r31 rear brakes and the bias was too much to the rear, would lock rears up way before the fronts wanted to kick in
so had to run a wilwood bias valve to get it more neutral

good thing about r31 rear setup is that if you want to run a hydro handbrake you can just use commodore rear calipers as they dont have the cable handbrake stuff in them

Hi there PIGDOG

Sorry, i should have been a more specific. I am currently running the rear end out of a 1500 ute & it currently has discs on it.

They work ok but i now want to put more bias to the rear so the car squats a little more under super heavy breaking rather than dancing around so much.

I was hoping to find a really straightforward but reliable upgrade option.

Out of the 2 options you mentioned, which would be your preference? Also, rather than running a cable hand break, how would a hydraulic hand break work?

upgrading from drums? on what diff?

if its a h165, ute diff, then you can get bluebird discs which are a straight bolt on to the diff and will work with the stock handbrake cable....but clearance with the body may be an issue

or can go r31 rear discs and calipers, fairly easy mods need to be done to the r31 caliper bracket and it will bolt to a h165, caliper offset with the disc is also spot on using the stock r31 bracket
just requires a bit more work with the handbrake cable

Hi All

I know the topic of brake upgrades have been discussed many times before however these seem to focus on front brakes.

Can anyone recommend an upgrade for the rear?

I am currently running a solid rear rotor & want to replace the rear rotor & run slotted & ventilated.

Any cheap suggestions?

For those who originally recommended the Landcruiser calipers - thank you. We just won our Tasmanian Super Sprint series Championship using them & the pads will last nearly 2 seasons of racing to boot.
