It's a good idea to do it if you can, the extra volume & distance the oil must travel will put extra strain on the pump.

Do you know for sure that you need an oil cooler? I opted not to run a cooler on my car, and it turns out I don't need one. Oil temps never go above 100 degrees.

Yes but Im not sure if you need higher volume or pressure, For my L16 I have a rebuilt 280zx oil pump which is meant to be higher volume to run with my cooler and remote filter block, not sure if that has higher pressure also.
