Wow, 110 is very low. My old A15 was 130, and that was with a decomp shim, and scooped out piston bowls, and a big cam. (which lowers the dynamic compression, although I haven't studied the specs hard enough to extrapolate how much)

When you have this thing back together, check your compression in the cylinders. I'm running about 110 psi which is lower than my stock A14 @ 160. I think this is what is helping me out with not breaking stuff.
Still waiting for new wheel bearings on my H165 diff replacement. Should be back on the road shortly.

hi guys, just an update...

ive had the head checked and its soft as. so obviously cant use it.

Ive found an engine which has a 5 speed and twin dellortos on it, theres other mods but i cant remember what they are off the top of my head. Ill run with that engine because its ready to go and with those carbys it should have a bit more grunt than standard.

Wise move mate. I wouldn't spand a cent on a used head without having it pressure and hardness tested. You if the bored are that worn, I'd have the valve seats recut, and new valve guides installed. You can get dual valve springs from kelfords. You maight as well get a (Big) cam grind at the same time.

i took the engine into the reconditioners today. heres the verdict:

~ theres not much wear in the bore but those scores are deep and the cylinders need reboring.
~ the pistons have bad wear on them, probably due to overheating at some stage
~ there is wear on the crank but not much. enough to be able to justify grinding it purely because the engine will be under more stress than what it would normally be.

all up to fix that im looking at $600. i will get the head checked out just in case the overheating has damaged it.

that would be the yellow one aye? i saw that.

with the bonnet clearance it would almost be best to mount the blower up and to one side of the engine, mount it above head height!

any idea if the standard a15 inlet manifold will be too restrictive? my other option would be some of those manifolds which are designed for putting hoses onto rather than bolting carbs to. Any idea where to get one of these (trademe is turning up nothing)

That's a fair price. You have an advantage with your moggy, in that you've got more bonnet clearance. This will enable you to make a set up that is less compact. Somewhere on this site there is a picture of a wicked blown minor.

ive got the engine block, crank and pistons in the back of the morry so tomorrow lunchtime i will pop down to the engine reconditioners and get them to have a look at the bores and measure the cranks and the bores.

i talked to one of the car wreckers today when he popped into work and he said he has a supercharged toyota estima arriving next week so if the supercharger is in good nick then i can buy that, he spoke of $250 which is a fairly good price for such an item in my opinion.
