The best tell tale to finding your illusive leak is simple, Baby Powder! Wash the sump/box everything down really well, let it dry completely then give it a good puff of baby talc. Start her up while cold in a minute you will see exactly were the oil is comming from. My guess is sump gasket around the rear main, they are a sod for leaking there. Should send a pic of mine! I get the drip tray out from under mine and pour it back in before I go for a drive!! A few drops HA! Last time I drove Betty, Mitchell to Charleville, 190klm she burnt and leaked about 1/2 a litre. You got no worries

I would also ignore the sump plug. It is a simple thread n seal arrangement. Unless it spins free or cross threads you do have an issue.

Tighten up and it seals.

Cross thread all crooked and it'll leak.

Well you know it is at the end of the sump.

There is a hard seal that sits on the end of the crank shaft before the flywheel.

There is also a semi-circled rubber seal that seals the sump to block EDIT: sorry, it seals the sump to the underside of the end bearing cap (securing the end of the crank that meets the flywheel) which carries the hard seal. This rubber seal may be old and what you may be getting isn't a three day leak but simply a tired seal.

Depending on how much time you have, you really ought to seal the lower end.

But it sounds like a minor leak so keep the convenience of an operating vehicle and simply observe.

Once it starts pissing out everywhere. Repair the problem and tackle all your other modification/maintenance plans.

It sounds minor, I wouldn't fret. Check your levels and fix it when it really goes wrong.

3 drops in three days? I don't call that a problem.

That reminds me of the forklift we used to have at work. When it stopped smoking the boss would yell at us "didn't you see it has stopped smoking? Put some oil in it before you ruin the engine!"

You know if you drain all the oil out it won't leak anymore...

They go quicker with a few leaks I am told.

yep sounds like rear main or seal on sumpo. had the same thing and still do, not as bad though. Did the rear main while it was out so i know its not that one.

I had a similar problem and thought it had to be the rear main seal.
I had to take the transmission off for another reason and had a look but the rear main seal was A1.

The problem turned out to be the sump gasket at the rear of the motor were it curves around the crank. The rubber had shrunk over time and would allow a little oil through. Probably didn't help that the sump bolts were a little loose aswell.

It leaked mainly after driving it and having it sit for a few days, the oil takes some time to flow down the outside of the sump. It was expecially bad if i had been driving up hills, or parked on a sharp incline days before.
And after topping it up with oil it would tend to leak more and gradually reduce to a couple of drops as the oil level dropped.

I would suggest checking the sump bolts at the rear of the motor, if this doesn't help it may require a new rear sump rubber!

thats my 2cents anyway

If the rubber seal has warped or come out of its groove it can leak.
Always when changing the oil filter rub a bit of oil on the rubber seal to lube it up so you dont damage it when fitting the filter.
