what are you buying? Is it new or used? If you buy it from the seller, and pay them to also send it to you, then you shouldn't encounter any additional charges.

GST is different from import duty, which is what "Duty Free" items are.

If a product is produced in Aus/NZ the GST is applied to the product at every stage or production/distrubition. The tax is incorportaed into the sale price. In Aus the list the GST free price as a legal requirement i am pretty sure, so that the tax is clear and not hidden.

You might be able to buy the item "GST free" from a retailer if NZ has a law that says you can. This would mean I image that you need to be a registered business that will pay it later. Even if you can but an item GST free from a retailer, you have already paid GST several times over on the item.

eg In a simple example, wholesale metal manufactuter will charge GST on the item cost to the truck driver. The truck driver then sells that metal to the retailer for the cost of the item plus GST again. The retailer then charges the customer the cost of that item, plus GST again.

If you buy an item (second hand/ new) you could avoid the GST at the last person in the chain. If you import an item into Australia, it may be subject to an import tax (or duty). This depends on total cost and what it is.

If you can fit the item into you bags and its of small value, you could possibly circumvent the process, but Im not a customs official.

Ever noticed how when you get something from Japan, it is often declared as a gift of less than $500 value? This is one way that people commonly get around import dutys. Legal, probally not. Cheaper, yes.

you could be subject to import tax if its above a certain limit.GST I dont think so. NZ already applies it to the purchase. Same as here.

Dundee1000 bieng the sage and seasoned imported might know exactly.
