I do regret painting the inside of my sump, I just wanted to be 100% sure it was sealed, I used plenty wax and grease remover cleaned well and used vht engine paint so fingers crossed I don't get any paint coming away in there.

I spoke to my engine machinist today when I picked up my freshly machined block. he said it's uncalled for on a japanese engine. The castings are so good that it just isn't warranted. I have heard of some people having the indside fo their blocks ceramic coated.
Oh to have an unlimited budget aye?

I remember when that pic was posted, and wondering how long it lasted. I too would be sh1t scared about the paint coming adrift from the block, and creating havoc inside the motor. I supose that the inside of the block is going to be quite rough, thus giving the paint a good key to stick to. But also offering many nooks and crannies for paint adhesion preventing impurities to hide in.

You will find similar paint in the insides of most old gearbox's and diff's. Used to stop trace amounts of casting coming apart. Very small granules like sand. Falcons have this problem with their engines, all the debris from the cooling ends up in the radiator and blocks it causing massive overheating problems. Some do it and some don't. I guess it comes down to if your falcon was built on a friday or monday!

yes Bart is right, the proper stuff is called 'Glyptal paint', and is for use eletrical windings.

ALOT OF HOTRODDERS USE IT FOR THEIR ENGINES, HERES A BIT OF INFO.

The pics i posted in my earlier post was from a member on this site, it is an A14 race motor. I just read through the post that it was posted in and it was hot tanked and the paint he used was just 'DULUX PRIMER SEALER' its not the proper gylptal stuff. Not sure how well it would work but the main reason he paited it in that way was to stop any casting from coming loose.

heres the other pics-

The paint all the hot rodders use to paint inside their blocks is called Glyptol. (Or glyptal?) it's used to paint inside electric motors, and is apparently pretty tough stuff. I might talk to my engine machinist when I see him next.
