You are correct when you say that once the drag of the clutches in an LSD is overcome, then the oposite wheel will turn the opposite way if the pinion is prevented from turning as this type is really a 'spin resistant' diff. However if you can do this by hand, then the clutch packs are totally shot & you effectively have an open diff.

it won't 'lock' at all. When you set the breakaway torque of a clutch LSD you check it by measuring it with a torque wrench. An unmodified datsun LSD will probably only have a breakaway of about 50ft/lb. With the leverage of the diameter of a wheel you can turn it fairly easily if you try.
If it locked up I'd be looking for broken parts inside jamming it up

depends on the sort of LSD, I asume a nissan bluebird has a cluch pack type? in wich case it will lock like dodgey sed, unless it is absolutly nacked!

Ok, I thought about it, incase I was mistaken. But I still think what I said is true, with either open or LSD, if you turn one wheel, with the pinion held stationary, the opposite wheel will turn in the opposite direction won't it?
With the drive pinion held the ring gear and so the diff casing, carrier, housing, or whatever you want to call it is also stationary. When the wheel turns, the axle will turn the side gear, (which once the breakaway torque of the clutches is exceeded in the case of a LSD) will turn the pinion gears or spider gears or whatever you want to call them, which will then turn the opposing side gear in the opposite direction, just like an open differential. Or am I missing something?

if you hold the pinion flange and turn one wheel the opposite wheel will turn in the other direction whether it's LSD or open. If it is LSD you will have to apply enough torque to overcome the friction in the clutches. This is for a clutch type LSD, the Quaife ATB type LSD are a bit different but I can't explain as I don't fully understand how they work
