As far as A series cams go, there are really only two types, early & late.

The front distributor cams [A10 & 1200] will interchange but will not work in 'rear distributor' cylinder blocks if you want to run a distributor.

All cams for rear distributor engines [1974 & later] are interchangeable & they can also be used in the early [A10 & 1200] engines, however with this swap the fuel pump will need to be removed & the hole covered.

O.K so this thread has me wondering if the A15 cam will fit in the late A12 and line up with everything ? e.g dizzy, oil pump, fuel pump etc... Also would A15 head (H89) and cam on/in late A12 be a good solution for a draw through turbo setup till i build up me A15 bottom end ?. Sorry to hijack but no point starting another thread, Plus this may help others.

Put the bent stick in it!
Its not a big cam, might aswell do it now and save some extra work later.

he has a newer a12...was rebuilt not long before he got it then upgraded to the a14. but the a14 was stuffed the whole bottom end needs doing and some head work. so all he has to do is get the head faced and then should be all good. i think he just wants a bit more power so any upgrade will do. I dont think his cam is that hot maybe just the next step up so i think it should work alright

If he has a late-model A12 (1974 and newer) then any head will will work without modification.

It will be fine. Not optimum for power, but if that was your goal, you wouldn't be using an A12 in the first place, eh? I think you'll find it runs a lot better than your lumpy-cam engine.

ok i have a later model A12 ,and i now understand what mike ment by the redrill ,being that he is using an early model A12 instead of a late model A12 like me

ok so i have now got a set of carbys ,they arent bike carbys ,(i know i already stated i was going for bike carbys but these will do the trick) but i picked up a set of 40mm twin sideys today at a good price ,so ill be using them instead ,my only concern is reliability ,will these carbys be ok for a daily drive or are they a constant tune type thing ,i was thinking about not using the A14 cam but it is so tempting cos it made it put realy hard around 3ish grand upwards ,but then as D and thedevelshands have already stated ,the standard cam is easy to drive with and isnt a pig at the lights or at low revs

would an A12 with twin 40mms run with a standard cam and how good ,would it be restricting the carbys ?

earlyer A10's and A12's have cam in a different spot so it needs a diferent cam to the A14 ones.
The camshaft is in exactly the same spot for all A series engines [in relation to the crankshaft centerline] & the A14 cam will physically fit & work in the 1200 & A10 engines, ........... but,

The early engines drove both the oil pump & the distributor from the same drive gear near the front of the block/cam.
Engines made fron 1974 had the distributor moved further back, so a second drive gear was included on the cam casting. This gear is, coincidentally, located exactly where the fuel pump eccentric for the early engine was located & the newer engines have their fuel pumps located elsewhere along the side of the block.

If you fit the A14 cam to an early engine, the forward drive gear on the cam will happily drive both the oil pump & the distributor while the rearmost drive gear on the cam will no longer be used.
You can not use a mechanical fuel pump since the second drive gear has replaced the earlier fuel pump eccentric so you will need a blanking off plate & an electric fuel pump.

The fuel pump eccentric on the A14 cam will no longer line up with a hole in the side of the block so, like the unused drive gear, it too will have become redundant.

You can not use an early cam in a late block if you want to run a standard type ignition system as there is no additional drive gear on these earlier cams to drive the distributor.

Lagwagon - my thoughts exactly.

I wouldn't put the cam from the a14 in the a12
