the strech orginally was used in early racing in japan, if you look at early F1 pics you can see the side walls of there cars lean out alittle... nothing to that extream but none the less thats where it comes from. this was replicated by the kuysha and zokusha communitiys (grand champion style) as they copyed the early Gr5 racing style etc... streaching the tyre actually gives a high profile tyre a stiffer side wall making it feel alot better than on a 'standard' sized rim for the tyre.

these days streach is used more for looks/asthetics. it helps alot in fitting oversized rims into undersized guards :P

i personally drift on 15x10's with 205/55 & 50's and its great! i have had a tyre come off the bead at QR mid corner around turn 2 but to my defence, the tyre had delaminated and its a bumpy corner.

Basically its for hardparking, you wouldnt slide on that stretch basically the bead would come off the rim and rim would meet asphalt, not cool.

the elvisextreme takes him 6 hours a day of compressor spray and 5 litres
of hairspray so the tire is easy in comparison.

It's not about performance, it is about looks.

The tires manufacturer say for best performance, use a certain range of wheel width. Stretching is about putting the tire on a wider wheel than the tire manufacturer specifies.

The tires on my ute are stretched. With flipped leafs and almost no suspension travel. Looks good, but does not handle great.
