Sounds like your engine earth cable is not connected.

When it is missing, it will go through any avaialble wire, including the small alternator earth -- or the clutch cable.

Fix it before the small wires burn up!

okay on the back of the alternator (hitachi) there is a 2 prong plug, A and E connections. ive connected the plug, the live wire to the A connection and an earth to the E. The earth lead gets really hot after turning the engine over for a few seconds. and the car wont turn over with the wire disconected? any help? cheers
