ok so you had the axles shortened , and i guess the housing was shortened too? if this is the case the bearing end should have been welded back on with a alighnment bar through the centre of the diff which means the hemi should have been out , if the ends were just thrown on and welded it might not even be straight and you will allways have trouble with it eating hemi bearings and wheel bearings , if you do half a job you get half a result

Pulled the diff out of a R31 that was been wrecked in the quokka and after 2 hours of battling to get it out. Checked the odometer on the car. 400,000 was a bit of a shock.

As not able to hear it running, I did pull the back off clean it out and visually look at the gears. no chipped teeth, no burring on the teeth, not sharp on leading edge so figured it was worth a shot.

I have done all the housing mods and then had Final drive machine axles to suit.

To the accuracy of my equipment the housing is true, but the diff shop I am thinking of using is going to check, but reckon that the symptoms I have are due to pinion wear.

As 3.89 gears are NLA new goin to drop 3.7 gears into it if my crown and pinion are at the end of there life.

If I can source a good LSD center they will fit this in preferance to an open center, but 2nd hand they are about 150-250 so struggling to justify the money on a street car that is driven once a month.

I wasn;t knocking your choice of diff
I have the same one waiting to get cut down for my own car
Plus 2 x 4.11 gearsets , a mini spool and a 4 pinion LSD

I was just curious as to why you would do all that work and not check the centre after so many kms

And who shortened the housing and axles ?

Niel at the end of the day the diff was cheap and I was fully aware that it may need a re-build. For $50 for the diff and $150 for axle mods I am pretty well infront of a comparable maddat setup.

Even if I throw $600 at it, it is still a reasonably cheap diff setup. But will probally look at dropping a Commodore LSD unit into it as opposed to the open center. Can drop back to 3.5 or 4.1 gears as these are way cheaper than 3.89 ones.

Here's my thoughts

Pull the diff out and send it up to Diff shop and get them to have a look. Dont want to stuff up the axles I have just had splined. Unlikely I know

If they come back and say pinion and crown is stuffed might do the looking around for good 2nd hand one one and look at buying lsd center for it. Are the $200 commodore ones on Ebay the go?

Thoughts

I am at the point where I am commited to staying with this setup having had custom tailshaft done, custom handbrake cables, shortened housing and having axle re-splined.

Done a bit of a ring around today. For new bearings and reset of the tollerances its going to cost be about 500.

One joint wants to drop new crown and pinion into it, but they want $900 just for the new gears. Then another 500 for bearings and setup.

The other shops were prepared to use another crown wheel and pinion if I could find a good one (assuming mines stuffed). There is a heap on Ebay, but will have to do a bit of research as these are $200 and you can get another diff for that sort of $$$.

They all said sounds like pinion bearing wear which has confirmed my suspissions.

Your problem is: oil, adjustment or wear - in that order.

If it's to the point where it's that loud & it's getting hot, either way it's stuffed and you should fit a new set of gears to it.
