Thanks for the offer tom. I've just fitted a round port head and a single sidedraft manifold in the hope that I will see/hear the results I want.
If the
noise is still there after all of this I'm going to throw this engine off the pier at at the beach

I'll let you know how it goes, the round port head seems to have a buggered thread for one of the rocker assembly bolts but I;m going to run it briefly in the hope that this fokken annoying tapping sound will be resolved.
@ ssskiwi I pulled the head apart and tapped on and around the seats hoping to hear some vibration from a loose seat......no dice. I also tapped the valve guides to see if there was any movement, no dice. I checked the guides for wear, all good. I also checked that the rocker arm wasn't hitting the top of the valve guide from the huge cam lift, looks all clear.
If this new head doesn't erradicate the noise my next suspicion is a loose cam sprocket, maybe a loose tensioner ( BTW: no debris in sump from plastic tensioner pad and no abnormal timing issues as a result of loose sprocket). Failing that I will look for a loose gudgeon pin, or sloppy cam bearing (new when rebuilt) but #OOPS# me I'm stumped if the noise is still there after all this.
