Andy, Drive home in 4th, the path of power is strait thru from input to output shafts. (5th will work more
of the tranny.)

I got a chance to look under the car and take the driveshaft off today. The front U-joint was shot, so I put a new one in. After installing it, the ride is smooth as silk, however, when I
looked at the front yoke of the driveshaft, there were small metal shavings along the front of the splines....not good. So this weekend, if I make the 2 hour drive, I will have to find
another Sunny 5 speed and put it in. The transmission is still making a lot of noise while in gear, even when the clutch in, the fluid was full, but a little dirty for only 6 months old.
It's only when the shifter is pulled out of gear that the noise stops. I'm gonna ride 5th the whole way home (unless I HAVE to downshift). I've got my work cut out for me for this weekend/
next week!

If you feel its the trans...4TH GEAR ALL THE WAY HOME. Every time i waste a trans (4 or 5 spd) its the counter shaft bearing thats in the middle of the trans. My thinking is that
in 4th gear the input and output shafts are coupled together and all the gears just go for the ride. It also made the least amount of noise.

Hi Andy - I'm being a bit obvious but have you checked your gear oil level? It should be lapping the tread on the
fill bung. Ian.

Uh-oh...sounds like trouble. My transmission has been making some whining noises in gear (even when the clutch is pushed in). At first I thought it was no big deal, maybe the throw-out
bearing was going bad. As I thought about it more, I realized it couldn't be the T/O bearing as the noise happens when the clutch is both in and out (but only when it's in gear). Well,
within the last two days, I've picked up a strong vibration in the drivetrain when accelerating in any gear between 2000-4000 rpm. It doesn't do it in neutral, and it feels a lot like a bad
U-joint. I'm thinking that it may be a U-joint, so I'll check them in a day or two, but I'm betting that it's the transmission, maybe a main bearing in the tranny or something??? Any
thoughts???? I need to make it home on Thursday and it's a 2 hour drive on the freeway. I just want to make it there!
