I've managed to get a price for the GT Gas inserts and they were 280ish on a trade account for a pair - fair enough.

However, when I pulled the struts out I compressed them by hand against the floor and thought gee their slow (heavier dampening and also none were blown too). When I pulled them apart it turns out Monroe GT Gas inserts were already in there!

Nice suprise for me as I wont have to buy them - just springs and bump stops now. When I brought the car the seller told me that he got new shocks in the back but didn't mention anything about the front ones.

Looks like I'll get around to driving this car a bit sooner!

Duh!

210 and 310 struts are the same (2" and 110 are 45mm)

I've rechecked KYB but they dont say if there inserts are heavier duty or so.

I double checked and the Monroes are a strut insert too so I hope the price is resonable.

I cant find any KYB stuff for a B310 (only 210) and Monroe say in their catalogue that the ones they have for the B310 in fact are Heavy Duty. So seeing as I already got their shocks in the back I reckon I'll get their strut inserts for up front and King springs too (Monroe and kings sort of go hand in hand too - keeps things "nice" lol).

Because the gas ones are not tuned for a stock vehicle. That's a good thing if the car is too softly sprung like most Fords/GMs. But our Datsuns have a good spring rate already for street use.

If you want to change the design and race it or lower it, then certainly a different damper is called for. Go for it!

KYB sell the strut insert cartridges, so it will be cheaper than getting new struts.

I'll check the KYB site out soon.

Any reason why you said not to get gas ones?

I'm after a performance upgrade so I checked out the Monroe GT Gas range (already have their rear shocks - on stock springs it rebounds too slow so with lowering springs it would be good).

Seems that they make B310 struts too so I'll try and get a price tomorrow - probally very dear because they have a stub axle on them and dont bolt on like the new cars do.

Even if you get KYB aftermarket shock, like KYB 2 gas shocks, they will have heavier damping.

At least I think. This is certainly true for Datsun 1200. Last month I removed my Monroe's and went back to the original KYBs which ride smoother and have less bounce (with stock springs).

Nah in the front I have the stock struts and the rear has Monroe GT gas shocks I think...
I looked and from what I saw I could read Mon... and GT... - the rest was covered but they are the gas coloured ones so I think they are.

So your saying that If i get a NON KYB aftermarket shock it will have heavier dampening? If so thats great.

The rear GT Monroes already have heavier dampening (I think) and this would mean I only need 4 lowering springs and 2 heavier dampening struts to lower it and yet have a handling upgrade.

PS - My intention for lowering is to reduce body roll and rear end sag when the car hits boost and just for over all better handling - looks is not the prime consideration.

Do you have the original shocks? Because replacment shocks have heavier damping.

It's easier to get stiff shocks and strut inserts than it is to get the original designed-specifically-for-B310 parts. To get the real stuff you have to go with Nissan genuine/KYB OEM. A good quality oil shock (non-gas).

Hi,

I've got the front end of my datto apart (bumper, grill, radiator, wires, clips, all suspension and steering stuff, etc) and I was considering lowering the car in the future so it makes sense to do it now as I've only got 1 bolt to pull the struts out!

However, I've got a few mixed thoughts/opinions about lowering.

I wont go coilovers as the rear end is "only" a live axle setup (if the car had "proper" suspension coilovers would be the hands down winner).

I would like to think just dropping in lowering springs would be a easy (and good!) way of doing it but ideally you need different dampers because stronger spring rate need more dampening to reduce bounce.

So this brings me too...

Are just stock struts/dampers ok to be used with lowering springs? How bad do they pogo?

Is there a drop in replacement for the front strut and rear dampers of a B310 that offeres more dampening?

Better yet, is there a drop in replacement that ALSO is shorter (so lowering springs wont be loose?)

How did you lower your B310?!

Will say a S13 strut fit into the B310 steering/hub knuckle? yet offer more dampening?
