Got it. Those are popular here too, they call them "LZ" or "L-Frankenmotors". A 510 guy wants an L-block 2.4 four.

I think they mean the 2.2/2.4l strokers you make with Z series cranks or just the whole Z2.x bottom end.

They are an institution in the ACT/Aussie rally scene!!

Check out www.bmsc.com.au theres a fair few grunter threads

But as DD said cos of the longer stroke they're less rev happy.

L - series "Grunters" are usually around 2.4 litre, L20 block with Z - series modified crank and a combination rods and pistons to get the capacity out to close to 2400cc.
A bloke I know has recently built one for his 1600, I've seen a few over the years in Rallying, sound sweet!

There is no definition. People that use the term are being vague. They probably mean an engine built for low-RPM HP rather than favoring high-RPM HP.

For example, the 65HP A14 makes more power at 2500 RPM than the 80HP A14.

I was just doing a bit of reading on the 1600 and came across the term "grunter engine".

what defines a "grunter"?
