Try a local auto parts store -- all the L-series cables fit, just different lengths. Maybe $25. Made in china, but they work OK and seem to be good quality. They are only $15 here.

Nissan or I got one made by speedscreen in Melbourne, $50 and was 300mm longer!

Bad earth or old age causes the plastic liner to melt. Buy a new cable when everything else fails. You could puff some graphite powder down the inside or the cable, it might help.

I like to shake it all!
Maybe take the speedo drive gear out and check the gear and shaft if Miks suggestion does not work.

Disconnect the speedo cable and see if it spins freely when your driving slow in a car park. Is it only doing it at speed or even when stTionary
