Agreed SR20DET with 6-speed is more $ for less bang. You can get more bang per buck by going with a larger less expensive engine.

Although the S15 6-Speed alone might be a lot of bang for the buck for a street car. I'm told you can get them cheaper than 5-speeds and they will hold up behind A-series. Let's you fit steep diff gears for maximum acceleration and still cruise low rpms on the highway.

economical to me means getting the most bang for the $$ so I would be thinking of something like a std. SR20DET/6spd combo.

how the FUDGE does a 6 speed fit that category?, i couldnt think of anything more useless and complete wank factor than a six speed in any car

We dont do emissions testing in Indiana so that part isn't a big deal. there have been a lot of great suggestions and I appreciate it. The rear end in this car definitely has to go, it's a replacement from the original that had shredded gears. This one also has whining issues, and it make the car pull to the right. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure i've read that the axles snap in these if you put a turbo on an a15. the 200sx diff seems like a viable option. I wouldnt putting a turbo on my existing engine, along with a new cam, but where do I find these parts?
