Hi, the first thing you have to say to yourself is "how much you want to spend" and then stick to the budget. The bugeye is a great car. They weigh just over the 600kg mark. So you dont need huge HP... clean the head up with a mild porting and maybe twin carbs with a mild cam. Behind a 5 speed it would be fun. I wouldnt go over 10:1 compression and use a heavy duty clutch.

Hi, first time post for me... I have a Frogeye sprite with an A14 engine and box fitted, I just got this 3 months ago as a project...
After having issues with blue smoke i stripped off the head today to find the bores in poor condition. and the pistons very very oily.....
So block being sent off tomorrow to the machine shop for rebore to the maximum size they have pistons for..i need to see what they suggest/have available, but from what i read on the tech wiki it should be 77.5nn dia pistons
my question is... whilst i have the engine out/head off, what would you experts recommend i do to give more performance ? i have the std carb, but a larger exhaust and 4-2-1 manifold The head is an H75 oval port with the open chamber design.
would a higher compression ratio help ? i could get the head skimmed by the same machine shop...
whilst the engine is out i also plan to swap the 4 speeed box to a 5 speed,,, i saw a couple of type 60 box's at my local scrapyard....can i just use the std clutch set-up or do i need to do something with different parts....
i plan to use the car as a daily driver but with some poke for the occasional track excursion . my driving style however tends to be relaxed and i prefer more low end torque compared to high end revs/HP.....
thanks in advance for any assistance.
