As much as I love the clean simple shape of the 1200 ute, the stupid handles on the tailgate look like arse ...

So, my question is, has anyone here done it, and if so, how?

Removed the external latches? Several guys have done so.

Internal latch with opening handle

Or how about air-operated, could be made to work even with a tonneau cover

internal latches look smooth but is a pain in the @ss you need to open the tonneau to get to it and if you shut the gate with a full load you may not be able to get to it after the load slides up adainst it from experiance i now love my love handles

OK, I re-read what you wrote, it was a pretty short read:

Good idea but wouldn't be very practical... Imagine someone that parks up your ass... How would u open it?? Inertanal latches are the go for sure...

How do internal latches help open either type of gate (side-opening or standard-opening) when someone is parked right behind it?

Think u need to re-read what I have wrote mate... I am not saying internal latches make any difference in terms of opening the tailgate... Pretty sure a metre wide tailgate swinging open on ' piano latches' needs more room then the standard method...

How are internal latches going to help when somone is parked right behind the tailgate? Either way you wouldn't be able to lower the tailgate.

Piano hinge could be used with either stock External latches, or custom internal latches.

I used the latches out of a toyota hilux for the internal latches - just mounted the handle inside the tray and shortened the linkage rods. I managed to pick up a complete tailgate plus all to the bits mounted to the body and just cut out the sections I needed.

i would weld a 25mm rhs frame on the inside the tailgate with a brace for support in there then when u attach ur hinges you shouldnt get any sag but u will need to brace the tub side too

as to the internal latch could u mount one upside down and run to cables to the release???
