Thanks DD. I've replaced the check valve thinking the same thing but I think its a defected brake booster. It must have a little leak which causes it to lose vacuum. :(

Vacuum Leak in the brake booster or the vacuum hose to the booster or the check valve in the hose.

Yea I've always suspected the booster has been dodgy. Could be part of the reason why my brake pedal sticks a tad?

The idle issue may be vacuum related as the booster needs vac signal from my understanding.

Another reason I hate boosters on old cars.

I have the same problem, for some reason my brake pedal sticks the slightest bit but and it affects the engine idle and the light stays on. Don't know the fix.

I bought the little pack of plastic "christmas trees" from Super Cheap. They are a flat disc with a plastic pinetree looking thing on them, normally used as trim clips etc. Little bit of cutting and it works perfectly.

The little 'lozenge' in the brake pedal that the switch sits against has broken. They are a brittle plastic & break easily. To confirm this check where the switch touches the pedal, there's probably a hole that the switch goes through. This causes the switch to open the circuit & the brakes lights come on. The easiest way to fix this is tape a small coin over the hole so the switch has something to close the circuit. I use a 5 cent piece & some insulation tape myself.
