You can also run a catch can with a feed to the induction or a PCV valve to keep all those fumes from going to atmosphere. Instead they are cycled through, burnt and released as a little more environmentally friendly.

If you have that much oil coming out of the little air filter at the rocker breather then there is something seriously wrong. Are you sure the oil leaking onto the manifold isn't coming from a leaky rocker gasket?

With regard to the PCV circuit I was asking whether the crankcase breather was blocked off for some reason? Any chance of a picture of your engine setup? I would be setting the rocker cover fumes back through the induction, just like the factory setup.

Haha that did cross my mind Neil! Hopefully cleaning or replacing the pcv valve will sort it, seeing as that's the quickest and cheapest solution. Besides, I don't want to do an engine rebuild just yet... At least not until my shed's built!

my a15 strarted doing a similar thing to this when it did a head gasket ,i put a new gasket on and then it started blowing heaps of oil out the side of the block ,never did it before the gasket went ,i am assuming its the gasket not having a drain hole or something cos its got 245-250psi on all cylinders when i did a dry comp test

i pyut a catch can on and thats sorted it i think ,when i revved it it would blow a cloud of smoke from the extractors but now it just blows into the catch can but gets half way through the pipe then goes back into the sump

Good points, I didn't think of the compression ring or the pcv.
Honestly Chris, the only things I've done to the engine since I bought it was give it a tune up, adjust the valve clearances and reset the carby float level. I'll check the pcv first.
Cheers guys!

To me it sounds like there is a combination of problems? Have you blocked off the PCV line? This can cause a rise in pressure in the rocker cover as the crankcase pressure is having to exit via the top.

If not, the engine must be very tired if it is producing that much blowby. A new set of rings is certainly in order and I suspect you'll be pleasantly surprised with the additional power you'd regain with the rebuild.

It's the rings. So your oil control ring works good, but your compression ring lets too much blowby. To confirm, do a cylinder leakdown test.

Maybe the oil drain galleries are blocked, the oil builds up in the rocker cover and squirts out the breather?

Without an engine pull down, fitting a catch can is the simplest temporary workaround.

It's not the rings, as the oil isn't burning in the combustion chamber. Which I guess eliminates my gasket theory.
