So I got to LOWTECH's about 6pm. Then we spent some time looking over his 1200 coupe (for photos see http://datsun1200.com/modules/newbb/v ... id=419243#forumpost419243).

Once we got the cylider head off, found it was warped 0.020 inch (limit is 0.004 inch).

And on a Friday night, no time for a machine shop to mill it, and the car show was early Saturday. LOWTECH offered his old A14 out of the 1200 Coupe.

Only took about 1/2 hour to get the old A12 out

... but 10 more hours to swap the A14 in place of the A12. Part of it was being slow from being exhausted and working during night. Adam kept me going with encouragement and worked the night through. When I wanted to give up he would say "you came all this way, just get this done and get to the show".

We had to swap or modify so many parts -- including manifold & carburetor, distributor, water pump, mounts, radiator, fuel pump, flywheel, rocker cover, pushrods, timing, etc -- but finally got it done. One thing that slowed us down was when the truck slipped off the jack and came down on the throwout lever which then got stuck in the Tunnel. Adam figured out how to get it un-stuck.

Many things like that.

Finally at 6:30 am we got it running at I ran out to the coast to Long Beach for the Japanese Classic Car Show just in time for entry.

Many thanks to LOWTECH, and also to other guys from Ratsun (the west-coast USA Datsun forum) that gave me encouragement.

Did I show any pictures from the show?

Oh man what a journey. Almost too much for an old man like me (late-40s). But with help from various folks (including LOWTECH from Datsun1200.com) it was an ultimately successful trip.

I visited old friends and several relatives too, which helped me keep positive.

The old A12 was perfect for the first 900 miles. 170 mile to Oregon, down the length 300 miles to California border. Then I saw Mt. Shasta.

It even went 5000 RPM for much of the trip through the Great Valley of California, at outside temps up to 104 degrees. I kept getting overheated and occasionally poured water on my head. In fact it took me a long time to go the length of California because I stopped every hour to cool down myself. The A12 had no problem all during this time.

It made it up and over the Grapevine (mountain pass into LA) during mid-day with no problems -- I even passed everybody doing the speed limit of 65 mph (106 kph).

Passed this Datsun Roadster at the top of pass, which was headed for JCCS

After I went over the pass at mid-day on Friday, I had a long lunch then checked the radiator. Not a drop of water was missing.

So it was a huge surprise that just a 1/2 hour later it massively overheated. I was doing about 4500 RPM and the outside temp was 100 degrees, very hot, but passed a truck up to about 4800 RPM. That was when it happened. It was about 3 pm, and I ran slowly to the offramp about 1/2 mile away-- which is undoubtedly what cooked the A12. I should have pulled over immediately on the side of the freeway. It happened on the Pasadena freeway. I coasted up the Rose Bowl exit offramp.

While I was there, three Datsun pickups went by, like this 620:

On the side of the road, I pulled the plugs and tried to do a compression test. But water came out of all four spark plug holes. Crikey!

I called LOWTECH and he said I change the headgasket at his house, so I had it towed there which was about 20 miles away.

Yes, I saw many peeps in cars eyeing the ute all during the journey. A guy from Nissan followed me to a gas station in Anaheim. He said "i thought it was a Datsun!"

Finally home! after 2500 miles and 15 days. Got home last night at 6:30 pm before dark here.

It was the only day of the 15 where it wasn't HOT. Only got to 70 degrees. 1200 ran fine, except for the dead possum on the freeway. It ripped the speedometer cable off, but I was able to fix it with the help of a car club member.

LOWTECH, I've been down that road before hurrying up and slaving all night to get something ready for a show or something. Next day typically you feel exhausted and wasted, sometimes into the day after that. Top job getting him up on all four and to the show. If you're ever in Las Vegas come by, especially if you're broken down.

DD: I was following on Ratsun and saw you seem to have had a radiator problem since the motor exchange. I have the stock A12 radiator and shroud from my 1200 I won't be using anymore as I've got the CA and KA radiator. The old A12 unit was a rebuild and never overheated on me when the old a12 was running. I'm here in Las Vegas if you're interested in it.

Without Lowtech help i would have missed JCCS. You are a hero and a gentleman.

I have done good Datsun deeds and regretted it later saying never again, but you meet new Datsun folk and things change.
