They come as a unit. You can get them from Nissan, from mail order, and they used to be available (maybe still are) from Supercheap and other auto spares places.

$2.66 USD at RockAuto.com

Well I've just had alternator problems. My bearing seized in my alternator so it needed to be reconditioned. Before it seized the light was coming on every once in a while. The local auto electrician did it for me for a very good price and replaced the bearing and the brushes.

DD is right however. Start with the easy things first. Check your fuses, Test your battery. Don't assume its the alternator. There are other elements in the charging system. No sense paying to have your alternator fixed if thats not the problem. Identify the problem first.

I will caution about running out and buying new brushes. The alternator light has several causes, and new brushes may not fix the problem. So inspect the brushes, and the only buy new ones if they are below the limit.

Yes. Try your local auto electrician.

Worn brushes can cause flickering dash lamp, or intermittent charging.

Brush Check

Very easy to check -- these just unbolt from the rear of the alternator. Replace if worn down to the line. Also check the brush pig tail and replace if obviously worn to the point of near-breakage.

Brush comparo:
Open in new window

* left: worn down to the limit line (7 mm or less)
* right: New

> I have to rev it to get the light to turn off.

Another cause is when the brushes inside the alternator are worn to the limit. They unbolt from the back, take a look at them.
