Yes, that is part of Bleeding and should be done anytime the master cylinder is replaced or runs dry due to leak and is refilled. Specifically it is called "bench bleeding" the master cylinder. See Brake Bleeding.

Just a tip.... sometimes you need to 'prime' the master cylinder

what I mean is that sometimes you can fill the reservoirs but the fluid does not get into the master -especially for the rears (front part of the master)

I got an old brake line and bent it so I could squeeze some fluid from up underneath and filled the reservoir through the system (thus guaranteeing that there were no air locks in the master).

then replaced the brake lines as normal and bled the system

I hope you can follow what I am talking about

The car has been sitting in the shed for over 2 years so any signs of a leak would have dried up by now, but I'll get some fluid and check it out.

Thanks for your help

If you don't see it run out, then it is not leaking (or you aren't looking hard enough). Keep looking. Look inside above the throttle pedal (pull the mat back).

All the wheel cylinders are new.

I'll try topping up the fluid and bleeding the brakes, but I have a feeling it will be the master that is the problem.

Fix the leak first. Is it leaking at the wheel cylinder? Leaking at the reservoir? Find the leak for sure so you know which part needs replacement.

After checking I see that 120Y w/o booster uses same master cylinder (11/16"). But drum vs disc/drum differs. The one on eBay does not show the push rod, so I'd pass on it. Maybe you can swap pushrods, maybe not. All the 1200 ones I've seen come with pushrods which are not normally detachable without partial disassembly. Units meant for a brake booster come without pushrod.

It's not working. It's leaked so bad that one of the reservoirs is completely empty and there's no pressure in the pedal

What is wrong with it? I've seen a lot of them with mild corrosion like that on the outside that still work fine. Just clean it up if it is working fine.

120Y master cylinder doesn't work on a 1200.

Supercheap, Repco, Peps.

I've got a 76 1200 Ute that I want to get registered before starting a project on.

One of the issues is the master cylinder looks like this:

As you can see it's clearly buggered.

Where is the best place to go for a new one?

I found this one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/1606056085 ... _trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 - It says for 120Y but as far as I can tell it's the same size as the 1200? 11/16"

Will this one work with 4 wheel drums or would it be a disc/drum model?
