I've heard the 11,000 rpm story too. I was even told of a GT5 1200 that would hang with a GT1 Corvette on the front straight at Texas World Speedway. Never saw it myself though.

My old A12 from the factory, was capable of 6600 in 4th down the main straight.

I think valve bounce was what stopped it going any higher. I've heard of A-series doing 11,000 rpm.

give it a rest, isn't once enough?
most of those ads (and current ones) are written for someone with a 4th grade education level.
I am fairly certain that those who are here and reading this, including you, have a much higher level of intelligence.

The red line is at 6000rpm, on my one anyway. Can't wait to get a tach to see if I ever get anywhere near that!

The Datsun 1200's are really something ad is pretty funny.

Quote:
The torque comes on at 3,600 RMP -- traffic power!

Right. This was just about 2,000 rpm too high for the average American of 1970.

Quote:
Easy Rider ... The 1200's suspension ... Ideal for multi-purpose machines this size and weight. Stable, sure tracking for comfort and roadability

Yeah, right. They used McPherson strut because it was cheap, not because it is inherently more comfortable. The 1200 is a fairly uncomfortable ride as far as americans are used to. The front end is pretty good, but the light weight and rigid rear axle is comfort-killer. Compare to the venerable Citroen 2CV as a lighter car that had 4-wheel independent suspension. Also, with the original bias-ply tires, the car didn't track very well, but tended to wander.

Quote:
No Fueling Around ... At up to 30 miles to the gallon, you won't use your locking gas cap often.

This seems to be understated. I'm sure the 1200 gets more like 35 mph highway when broken in. With most of the speedos reading wrong, it's hard to tell (come on, who got their speedometer certified?). And it's the little things like locking gas doors that made us wonder why american cars weren't as smartly designed.

Quote:
Happy and responsive past 6,000 RPM

Come on ... the red line was about 6,300 wasn't it? In any case, with the stock carb and gearing, it was out of the torque curve at 5,000 RPM. No point in revving it past that. A bigger carb and exhaust is needed for this so-called "6,000 RPM" performance.

The ad maybe funny, but they got this right:
Quote:
rugged ... economical cars ... a new standard in the lowest price field
