Tom, the ute is being towed by a towtruck not sure if its flat towed or not but I took your advice and put some rags in there absorb any leaks and rapped the rags in tape to keep it secure. I will do the same to the diff as my tailshaft is too long. I don't have any spare yokes to put in there but that is an excellent idea for future reference.

Good idea with the screwdriver. At the moment I have it suspended with 2 bits of wire looped up to a pipe sitting in the cabin. As far as the tailshaft goes....I got a bad feeling my ute shell came with a H145 diff rather than the H165. I will take pictures to confirm.

Levey likes to mount anything with a little hole in the rear.

Another way to support the gearbox is to put a large screw driver through the gear lever pin hole, inside the cabin, so it rests on the transmission tunnel.A large enough phillips head screwdriver should be long enough to keep it in place.
As for the tailshaft, are you sure it's not a tailshaft for a H145 diff & you have a H165 diff? the H165 tailshaft is shorter by about the amount you mention. Do the yoke on the tailshaft match the yoke on the centre? The H145 bolt spacings is smaller than the H165. Is the gear selector in the centre of the hole? If it's too far back, the engine's too far back.

Is the car being flat towed or trailered? If you have to flat tow it and you don't want the gear lube sloshing out the back you could simple make some put a spare yoke in or just stuff some rags in the back.

True Chris. Not a bad idea. Also found another problem......tailshaft is about an inch too long.

I'd be inclined to hoop some wire around the snout/nose of the gearbox and bring the hoop up through the gear shifter hole. A piece of timber across the hole carrying the wire will suspend the gearbox.

Provided the car isn't moved too much it should do the trick.

Seems a shame to drill through just for moving the thing.

If I install the tailshaft would that alone adequately support the gearbox for transport??

Just installed my A14 and 5 speed on my ute shell only to find out that the gearbox mounts that are usually welded to the chassis are gone! I need to secure the gearbox for transport. Think about drilling some holes in the floor for temporary fixing?

Any better suggestions???
