Yes the starter castings differ slightly. But they use the same bolt pattern.

Hi Guys

i pulled the starter motor this part out

http://www.fixkick.com/nostart_files/starter_motor_pinion.jpg

and checked it , but when it is out it is turning only one direction is there any possibility like that for it to behave differently when fixed and removed, what should be checked further more, or shall i refix it in order again and check it back again ?

thanks
regards
sumith

== Testing Overrun Clutch ==
If your starter "whizzes" just after the engine catches, the Overrun clutch is almost for sure bad. If you do not replace it, eventually it will wear so much it free spings, instead of turning the engine.

# Remove starter from engine
# With your fingers, turn the small drive gear.
#* It should smoothly turn one direction
#* It should NOT turn at all the other direction, not even a little bit

Yes, the drive gear is replaceable. As a test, you may swap the starters from your two Datsuns to see if it makes a difference.

gor, if the prob started after you tidied up the under dash wires that's the first place to look, you might have pulled a wire of it's terminal

Hey guys I have a similar issue, have checked the ballast and ignition switch and they seem fine...
Im getting the car ready for road worthy and it was starting fine a few weeks ago.
Had to tidy up wires under dash with zip ties but don't think it could have been that.
Have attached a video of it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9cx7q4bn7s
Thought it could just be starter solenoid but its odd that it has happened all of a sudden.

Cheers,
Ben
