The 1000 is like a baby sized 510 styling is spot on for a Japanese classic and looks better than mk2 escorts or ae86 roku hachi which now match many Z cars for price yet the appeal of the 1000 is the raw power to weight. If it was released with an 160hp A13 or 170hp A16 it would have been a headache for euro sports cars. Also look at fiat 128 Abarth, Gordini R12 & boxy mk2 v8 Toranas, they fetch equally or more than a Z.
Matt, borrowing some RS rally flares wouldnt look bad either, I saw one fiat 128 with the steel rally escort flares and it looked insane.

Supercharged A10 would be better than turbo for at least there would be some torque to start with rather than nothing at all down low.
big bore A15 either boosted OHV or high comp NA twin cam would be ample oomph.
