Thanks for the tips. I have aligned the clutch. It wont even take a line past the spigot bush. It is not even on the clutch splines yet. I have the clutch fork out so I can see what I am doing. I have the cross member out now and the box is sitting on the steering arm, so it is coming out too. If I that doesnt work I will take the turbo off, & put the engine almost on the ground and put it and the box together, then raise it up again.

Yeah i did a heap of swearing a few weeks ago, I dropped the gearbox fair on my nose, broke it and had blood everywhere. Not much fun at all, but funny none the less.

I have the supra intercooler almost fitting in the nose. I dont want to have it hanging out the front because it attracts too much attention. I have a radiator almost in, 68cm by 44cm, bonnet only just fits over it, should survive a hot day now. I redesigned the bonnet support to come up on angles from both bumper bar mounts, just between the intercooler and the radiator.

I made up an alignment tool on the lathe.

But I used to use a piece of wooden dowl and tape trick as Blake has suggested.

It always worked. otherwise, get yourself a small triangular file and taper the spline keyways on the gearbox, and put WD40 on the spline and clutch plate. Go easy on the plate, don't want to get oil everywhere.

I also like to loosen the engine mounts, or even remove the crossmember and put the engine,gearbox and engine crossmember all in at the same time. Put the car body on jack stands while doing the engine install.

I've been under a few different sized cars and used every swear word in the book and still had no luck on some days. So even with all these 'hot tips' you may still have to swear a lot.

If it is a clutch alignment problem, try this.
take a long 3/8 drive extension & tape up about 2" inches for the mail end.
The idea is to use the mail end, most are about the right size for the spiggot bearing ID. and the taped portion is to have a snug fit thorugh the clutch plate splines.
It might be difficult if you still have the engine loose.
I came into this conversation late but it sounds like a transplant is it.
if all fails pull the engine remove the box and replace the engine. Now put the box to the engine, rather than the other way.

sounds like the clutch plate isn't centred,so the spline on the input shaft won't go in far enough.if this is the case,you can get universal fit clutch alignment tools from most auto places,or fluke a fit with some doweling or such.thats where my old blown up a12 4 speeds ended up,as clutch alignment tools(or land fill).

I cant get the gearbox to line up and go in. I had a spigot bush problem, highway nissan gave me the wrong bush. Now I have removed the bush put the right one in and still cant get the box to line up. I have the engine off its mounts sitting on the sump on the crossmember. Next move will be to put the chassis rails up on stands and lower the crossmember dowm to get more angle on the box.

How did you bloke line them up? I have been at it for weeks now and cant get a win!

I got a stanza tailshaft and it fits the gearbox spline. Better than paying $200 for a skyline one!
