Hi so i just wanted to update the thread so people will know how this windscreen install went.

So the new windscreen rubbers i used are sunpha brand from thailand and look very close to datsun genuine parts

the instalation was fairly easy but you will need 2 people to do it.

Below are the steps i took

-clean all windscreen glue and sealant of with soapy water and a razor blade. It has to be very clean!!

-install new rubber around windscreen

-install chrome moulding small electrical screw driver helps in installation but be careful not to tear rubber

- insert thin rope into the rubber groove and end it at the centre bottom of the screen overlapping over each other

- i used wipper snipper line and wd40 in the rubber grove and it worked realy well

- clean all sealant of car window frame and make sure headliner is stuck down if not i used masking tape (contact adhesive did not work for me)

- install the window carefully by placing the bottom of the screen onto the window frame

- get the helper to push down onto the windscreen so it dosnt pull up when you pull the rope

- start pulling the rope evenly on both sides with downwards pressure on windscreen

its that simple i saved my self 300$ by doing front and rear screens my self

This was all installed dry no sealant i did test with a hose and got a slight leak in a corner so i used a non hardening sealant DO NOT USE A UREATHANE or it will crack and leak over time and will be impossible to remove without damaging your seal.

So the right thing to use is a non hardening butyl based sealant i used sealleys D-Mastic

Application is very easy but can get messy you will beed a standard caulking gun nothing special

- cut the nozzel on a slight angle but very fine

- push nozzle into the gap between the windscreen and rubber and car boddy and rubber and fill along until it starts to come out

- clean up with kerosene and rag

- you will need lots of rags!!

After doing this i dont have a drop of water leaking inside

So i hope this help someone tackling this job and also saving money.

I will give that a shot.

do you think a bucket of hot not boiling water will work aswell without ruining the rubber?

Sounds like a good plan.

My glass man says new seals are harder to install (yes, more difficult than 40 year old seals). He advises to get the new seal warm and soft before install. He uses a 100W light bulb in a large metal pail to warm the rubber.

I think the type of sealant most older cars use are a non hardening tar kind of sealant for gasket type windscreens.

I might install it dry like it says hose down the car and see if it leaks, if it does il try to force some sealant in with a caulking gun.

and yes the seal is brand new no rust etc in the window frames.

Thanks!

I will say this: people that use a high-quality outdoor silicone sealer often have leaks. So what does the manual mean by "approved weatherstrip adhesive"?

Page BF-36 says
Quote:
WATERLEAK CORRECTION

In many instances, minor waterleaks around the windshield may be corrected by performing the following operations.

1. Leak between rubber channel and glass. Using a pressure applicator (corking gun) with a narrow tip, apply an approved weatherstrip adhesive (black) between glass a rubber channel on the outside of the glass...
Using a dedicated automotive glass adhesive like 3M Auto Glass Urethane Adhesive might work OK. I think the manual means "caulking gun", so that means to force it in between the rubber and glass with more pressure than squeezing a tube of it.

I've always put them in with no sealer and didn't have leaks. If re-using the old rubber, make sure the channel is cleaned out and the rubber is warmed (soft) first. If using new rubber, do the same.

Because many peeps have ended up with leaks when putting sealant into the rubber before fitting the glass.

OK, so that's the factory Datsun 1200 service manual. I see the manual page now. Yes, it says to fit the rubber to the glass, then use the cord to fit the rubber/glass to the body opening (trying to fit the glass into the rubber is where I broke it before. Should be much less trouble following the manual).

AFTER installing the glass, Step 6 says:
Quote:
Using a pressure type applicator, seal inner and outer lips of rubber channel to glass with an approved weatherstrip adhesive as indicated in Figure BF-57. Seal completely around rubber channel.
Unfortunately, BF-57 is "removing door ventilator", and not the adhesive.

i downloaded the pdf version
http://www.datsun510.com/manuals/Serv ... ries_Chassis_and_Body.pdf

if you go to page BF-31 read step 6 and also the water leak correction part.

to my understanding you install it dry then push sealant in through the lips.

why not do it before installation?

thanks
