Go for the best-bang-per-buck. I'd guess you can find Ford 5.0 cars running for $500 and those engines weigh the same as Buick V6. They fit the 1200 easily except radiator needs to be moved forward (behind the grille)

Options so far i am toying with:

CARB:
Vq30 with carburetor conversion kit Holley 500cfm 2 barell
Buick v6
Vortec v6 with carb conversion kit. Holley of some sort

EFI:
Vg30
Vq30 or vq35

None except the Buick are going to be under $500

Buick V6 fits 1200 quite easily, see our V6 article, dunno how one with a turbo fits

Power to weight inferior to a built SR20DET/CA18DET or even to a stock Nissan Spec V engine 200 hp -- but you can't find those for $400-500

While I'll always be a fan of the Grand National, it seems like it'd be a super tight fit in a Datsun Sunny as it fills the heck out of a big old G body engine bay. I'm at a hair under 300 rwhp in my 1200 with a lightly modded SR20. Wasn't cheap but its still Nissan and gets 35 mpg! Heck, guys are making 200 hp on a turbo A series, but that'll add up too breaking transmissions and such.

1986 Buick Grand National, 3.8 liter 235 hp. On a cold day, it was faster than the 5.7 liter Corvette

I remember getting the Autoweek magazine with Buick GNX on the cover -- 276hp limited edition of 547. Last of the american muscle cars. It moved to FWD in 1988
