i put thick "performance" oil in my box at first but all it did was make the gear change really chunky, specially when the box was cold. so i put the normal stuff in and its pretty good now, still chunky when cold but ive never had trouble where i couldnt select a gear

It might be worn syncro's. This would happen to me on cold mornings. Worn syncros and cold thick gear oil.
I switched to a synthetic gear oil and the problem went away. It's a band-aid fix but it worked.

I agree with Brent, it could be the 1st-gear syncro rings. Reverse doesn't have synchros ... does reverse feel the same way?

First I would carefully adjust the clutch play, cause that might be it.

Start under the car as follows:

Clutch release lever play

Then, measure and/or adjust the pedal inside the car:

Clutch Pedal Play

sounds like syncrow (not sure of spelling) rings to me. Try selecting 2nd and then 1st with out releasing the clutch, should go into 1st easier.
