The 1200 steering column is supposed to have 230mls of MPS 90 gear oil. Filled through the fill hole in the top of the steering box.

We should all have factory workshop manuals..There another on Ebay this week, aussies can bid on it...

Just putting in my 2 bob's worth, your steering box contains oil normally the same grade as your g/box, this will flow up the column to some degree it will have a seal where the steering arm comes out of the box it should be a std size so most steering specialists should be able to replace it but it would mean removing the entire column.

First you said the column, now you say the steering box ... which one is it? Or does your 1200 have the old solid steering column firmly attached to the steering gear? There's not supposed to be any fluid in either type of column ... My confusion is I've never seen the old style. I think they were not used in US 1200s.

In either case there should be a rubber seal where the column or the shaft passes through the firewall, the rubber covers the hole in the firewall. Is there fluid above this either inside the vehicle or under the hood? You'll want to look up there with a flashlight and see.

The column doesn't contain coolant or oil ... however the steering wheel bearing (just behind the steering wheel) can leak a little lubricant. Mine did this.

You have two choices:
1. Do nothing, it won't leak much
2. replace or repack the bearing

what does the column box contain oil or fluid?? cause the leak is oil....

Mine had kinda the same thing.
It was actually brake fluid dripping onto the column and then dribbling down till it got to the floor.
Might wanna make sure it's not this first.

out the bottom i am pretty sure it is hard to see but is there seal there?? there is seal where the column goes in ? might be there...
