Yeah, that looks like a PCV valve ... you got it.

O.K.

So the stainless cylindrical thing screwed into the inlet manifold is something to do with the PCV and the mystery pipe has a hose that is connected to that so that crank case stuff goes via the engine and out the exhaust. (does anyone have a photo of what the PCV stuff looks like or have I correctly identified it in the included image?)

AND - the rocker cover hose was probably connected to the back plate of one of the carbs so that it was obtaining filtered air via one of the carb air filter covers.

SORTED.

Thanks everyone.

The pipe you have marked "Blocked (not needed)" is for the heater hose.

The "Where does this pipe go" looks like the other heater hose. On LHD cars, it is a screw-in fitting on the back of the cylinder head, but on the other side of the head (right side instead of left).

The pipe just below, sticking straight out of the block is for the crankcase ventilation. As stated, this normally goes to the PCV valve which screws into the intake manifold below the carb. The other side of the Postive Crankcase Ventilation system is the top of the rocker cover, which connects to a clean air filter. PCV is good for street cars, it won't make you engine run poorly.

BTW, nice GX exhaust manifold

the best way to do it is to put a breather filter on the pipe on the rocker cover, that is the inlet for the engine breather system, a filter will allow fresh air in and keep the dirt out.
then to the pipe in question, you want a hose to a catch can, or if you want to a PCV valve in the intake manifold, either way will work well.
the one thing that you don't want to do is connect the 2 together, if you do, you will get excessive pressure in the crank case and cause it to blow oil out.

I've got a spare filter for breather lines that came off one of my other cars. It has wire mesh inside it and foam. It can be cleaned out periodically with degreaser and hot soapy water. It fits inline with the breather i.e. cut hose in half and stick it in the middle.

I reckon I'll just fit the hose and route it through that filter I've got - that way I should minimise the chance of oil and #### getting back into the inlet.

Thanks for the info.

All Engine breathers should go to the catchcan (which is stuffed with stainless steel scouring pads), then from the top of the can, pipe it back to the intake. Otherwise when you race the engine, you end up sending oily crap through the intake.
This issue is worse on Turbo/Intercooled engines. As the oil deposits, reduce the efficiency of the intercooler.

Cool. That makes more sense seeing as I didn't think there was a need for any other water hoses. The inlet manifold had a hole in it where something must have previously been screwed into it at about the location of where the hose would have reached to. Should I just fit some kind of a tap into the inlet manifold to allow connection of that hose or just T piece it into the existing rocker cover to inlet manifold hose?

Seems easier to just t-piece it and have only one point into the inlet manifold for fumes etc.

The space in the inlet which I assume was for the PCV has been used to hold a custom bracket for my SU conversion.

Looks like the breather from the crankcase to me.
The vertical offtake was connected to the PCV on the original inlet manifold. If you are going racing, you should run it into a vented catch tank.
Some of the others will be able to confirm.

I've been putting this motor together from pieces I received. The car has no heater (and seems to have never had one) and the motor was previously in the car but had been torn down to nothing but the block and crank by the time I received it.

I'm trying to put it all back together and have worked out most of the pipes 'cos they're obvious but one has got me stumped.

See the included image for details:

The highlighted pipe had a hose about 40-45cm in lenght and it seemed to curve back around as if it were heading to the inlet manifold. If you can identify the pipe joint and where it's meant to go please say. Also is coolant flowing into or out of this joint?
