Make 'em an offer they can't refuse. Something like " I'm glad my car passed 'cause I sure didn't need to waste time duct tapping you big lying mouth to my exhaust pipe." Remember all......get a pre test! Once you get tagged as a gross polluter your car is practically WORTHLESS.

Hey AFRACER, you bet I will do that, I will double tune it at a real place with the right equipment, I will not lose the war, may have lost one round, but the fight is in my hands, I never give up. Smaller jets if needed, and a good analizer, and I will do it, plus I will request a test with me present, no more around the block kind of scam, all it takes is a screwdriver to screw your test results. I will keep you guys posted,it is worth fighting , it will be the last test, and I confirmed it, this year cars from 74 are exempted, a friend of mine has a 610 from 74 that got exempted, he did not have to smog it this year, so that moron was just talking bull. bro "NO", I vote, but unfortunately, many of these laws are enacted not by our direct vote, but by a group of unhappy dorks whose motivation is money, like you said before, if they need money, they make a new law that will allow them that money, like the petition and efforts to bring down the brand new 30 year exemption law, as long as there is sleazy idiots up there, it will happen, we need an overhaul of the way laws come into existence, because the current way, they invent any laws they need, we have no saying, voting or not. This is for all classic car lovers whose passion is hard enough without the government trying to rip every last dollar out of us.This is not meant to be harsh on a fellow datsun man......It's just the facts as I see them. First off, do you vote? I do not know you, so if this does not apply, skip ahead. If you do not vote, you have NO right to complain. With our glorious State bankrupt to the tune of some 40 BILLION dollars, You can bet your ass that every dime will be squeezed wherever found. Now you may say "I have no time for politics". Oh yeah?! How's your world now?!! Politics, good ol' bore the snot out of you politics, AFFECTS EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE! So please, register & vote. If things still don't go your way.....well, at least you said your peace.....and now you have a GOD given right to go for the hand grenades, petrol and plas-TIC'! By the way, if someone wanted to take my car away to look at it.......checkmate & game over, see you in Hell.

Yeah that sounds like a bunch of crap. It can be beat though. You could always throw a cat convertor on there for the test, also they make that stuff you pour in the gas to "Guarantee to Pass Emissions" they at least give you money back if you fail again. You might want to take it to a shop with a CO/exhaust analyzer to have it (fine)tuned. You might need to swap out some leaner jets in the carb. Also you could fine tune yourself! You'd be surprised what a O2 sensor and Air/fuel ratio guage will tell you! Even though you've gone through so much trying to get emissions right soemtimes it just takes the smallest adjustment to make the difference. I had a hellluva time trying to get my 1200 to pass with a brand new A15 (rebuilt) in it. It would NOT pass, but I had a bigger cam, unsettled rings from the fresh rebuild, and a Weber 32/36 which had no idle mixture adjustment. I got close, but finally gave up and registered the car at my friend's house in a city that didn't have an emissions sniffer, so emissions weren't required. That's how I got around it, but that was in Washington State, don't know how Cali operates. Good luck!

Hy ANG, I took my car to a gas station for a pre check , and it passed fine, reason that I know, the car was fine, besides, I did all the connections and check up, myself, with the 1976 Datsun book, and, I have a fairly new carbie, new air pump, recent new EGR valve, I just changed the head gasket and had the cyl head magnafluxed and checked, everything is fine, no reason why it should not pass, new vac hoses, connectors in place, clamps, all the details. I commited the mistake of telling this moron smog guy about my complains and how much I dislike this "rip off" scam about smogging cars, that set this idiot to have me fail. I told him it was my last test, he even argued it would not, because he argued models 73 and older are exempted this year, whereas the DMV and the CHIPS and the Bureau of auto repair told me this year is the 74 and older, in other words, this guy was telling me I would have one more, and when I told him about what the DMV and the rest told me, he said they (DMV Bureau of Auto,CHIPS) were wrong...stuborn idiot, this is the kind of guy that can and will ruin your day, just because he is a hatemonger. Worst of all, he did not want me to witness the test, he took the car to a secret hidden place, so, he can manipulate my carburator or timming to have my car fail. You would say why would he do that? because I placed a complaint with the Bureau of auto and the DMV, because, they say it is random "smog test only centers" inspection( as opposed to regular smog that is less stringent)...selection, and that is not true, I've been targeted for that stupid smog test only farze for the past 3 inspections, 6 years ago, 2 years ago, and now, and also my other cars went through the same, because all of them are about to be exempted(the 610 crossed the barrier, the jeep DJ too, but not the others)... and they do not want exempted cars on the road. Since I am complaining, it is in their interest to show my car as a polluter, not passing the test, now, their inmediate response is, "your car failed the emissions test"...they will do anything to stop me from getting the exeption. Most other people would had given up, get the 600 or so dollars they offer you, your car would be destroyed, they would collect money from the oil companies, the state and federal goverment, while you will get a new car and get into the roller coaster for the next 30 years. About the repeal of the law, if they do that, I will move out'a here, I will not stay around to be stepped on. Jaime. ___________________________________

Dude, I always ask for a pre-smog inspection or an "off-line" inspection just to see where I stand. Being labeled as a gross-polluter makes things more dificult ($).
Also, someone is trying to pass a bill repealing the 30-and-out smog bill. I'll find the site and post it. Good luck with you're smog test.

Thanks for the pipe tip Dgonz, and, to "NO" comment, yes, the exemption is supposed to run from this year 2003 on, as a 30 year and older exempted cars, so now they are supposed to exempt cars made in 73 , next year, 74, later on the 75 and the like. The DMV and the Bureau of autos told me currently they are exempting 74 and older, it should be 73(73 to 03= 30 years)... but maybee they count the year the car came out to the market, which is ussually a year earlier, as the model 2003's where sold at the end of 2002, and later in this year, 2003, the model 04 will be on the market, so that is the way it is supposed to work, but not as easy, those son of a B*&^%#(*@!!!! s told me today I failed the "test", they say too much oxides or something, which is baloney, because I always connect everything to the letter following the book, the factory Datsun book, and it always passed with no problem, but facing the fact that this will be the last test ever for my car...(they do not want you to get any exemptions, they would rather destroy your car and pay you, with taxpayers money of course, so that you will purchase a smog fee paying, money /revenue generating car, they do not like the "exemted" cars)...and last ever, because if in 03 goes the exemption for 74, in two years, 2005, the model 76 will have its turn, so, in 2 years when I would be scheduled for the next test, it would be time for exemption (My Datto is a 76) ...they want to make it difficult, Iknow they made that up, they took my car to a "behind the scenes area", when ussually it is done (exam) in front of you, so they could had tricked my carb /timming to get bad readings, busters, but I will fight back, the only really thing that bugs me is that I got to keep driving the car like this untill I pass that stupid test, the performance really sucks with all this smog crap on it. Well, I do not have to tell you how mad I got, I almost grabbed the guy by the neck! ...he even said," you also have a non aproved valve breather to air filter hose" because I used a piece of heater hose in place of my small valve cover breather filter, to try on the stock arangement, but, what a wimp, "non approved hose" I said, you M$#@*&^!!!! I 'll be back!!!!!!!!!!!!

What do you mean "last smog check ever"? Last I heard California is not adding aging cars to smog exempt status every year. As was previously touted. Might have something to do with that piece of sh!t Govenor putting us 40 BILLION DOLLARS IN DEBT! California is gorgeous, but the rulling Party just can't stop screwing it up.

Turbo muffler is better. Quieter and with better horsepower (if it is well designed). When the "turbo" designs came out in the 80s, they dyno'd them and the straight-through glass packs and surprise!
Use a 1.75 pipe unless you have ported heads and rev over 6,000rpm then use a 2" pipe.
