Yeah, thats the only thing that I can see that would make a plate worth buying privately (apart from the collectors ones like "2"). Apparently my KILV8S ones are the same, they won't get re-issued.

Actually it was the NSW plate "2" sold for 600ish grand, + 60,000 in Auction commission.

It's probably a good investment. Although, transfering the plate to another car incurs a oneoff costs of $7381.

I stand by what i said.
Buying plates for the sole purpose of making someone else pay a huge price is the act of a parasite, as the seller contributes NOTHING to justify the proffit. They are worth only what the RTA charges.
It's YOUR financial blood that they want to suck.

I run a Datsun 1000 coupe with "improvements" & i have had my '68 Datsun 1000 sedan since 1980. My '33 Dodge coupe runs a 325cid Dodge Hemi V8 & i have had the car since 1968.
One is for fun, a lot of fun, & the other is a real car. I love them all.
I know a good thing when i see it. Have you owned one Datsun for 23 years yet?
Chris

I have seen heaps of plates for sale but never actually heard a believable story about one actually selling in NSW (The plate "6" apparently sold recently for 600,000$).

The plates on my ute when i bought it were/are XXX-SEX. I had so many people asking me to sell them and after i while i started giving out my number but i never heard anything back off anyone.

I'd gladly sell my plates if a genuine buyer wanted them. Otherwise they'll go back to the RTA. Last time i registered it the lady said they probly wouldn't get re-issued according to the latest offensive/politically correct/incorrect attitude of the RTA.

Is there a private market for special plates in Australia? How common is this? I don't think this is possible with US plates, at least I haven't heard of it before.

If you don't want the plates yourself, why don't you return them to the rego people & let someone who DOES want them have the chance to buy them at the right price?

Or are you just a parasite?

Answer not required, we already know.
