First, you need to determine if the steering box is the problem. To do that, drop the steering rod out of the pitman arm if possible. If not, this will still work, but it is harder & more difficult to get an accurate result. Set the steering in the straight ahead position & grab the pitman arm. Move it back & forth & see if there is any slop. If there is, is best to see if the play is in the bearings, the sector shaft, or both.
At the risk of raising howls of vitriole, i must repeat what i write all too often. This is now a good time to get a workshop manual. There is a set procedure to overhaul or adjust these things & the manual has ALL the CORRECT procedures & specifications. The adjustment screw on the top of the box is NOT a cure-all. It adjusts ONLY the sector to ball nut clearance, but there are a number of other areas where wear & play can occur & some of it is adjustable, & some is not. The manual reveals all. Chris

Hey also, the ball joints at the bottom of the strut wear pretty quickly too! I used to check mine all the time, and never found any slop, however one day I noticed that something was touching the disc (about 6 mm of slop required to do that!!) I was damned if I could find any slop in them, either at full drop, normal operating height, or compressed but changing them fixed it.. I change em every season now.
Probably more of a problem with a heavy old tank like mine on soft rubber, but worth a look....

There are also joints and bushes in the drag link that can cause the play. Get someone to move the wheel from sid to side while you have a look around those joints and bushes where the other side of the drag link mounts to the body.
If there is no movement of the steering arm at the bottom of the steering box when the wheel is moved in that play area, you can adjust the steering box. There's a grub screw and a 14mm (I think) lock nut on top of the steering box. Back off the lock nut and adjust (screw inwards) just until the play is removed - do it in small increments (like 1/3 turn) and check again. Do not over-adjust this or the steering box will wear excessively. A sign of an over-adjusted box is slightly heavier steering. Remember to hold the grub screw still while locking off the nut when you are finished. If the adjusting grub screw is already fully screwed in, or is after you've adjusted it, you'll need to look at a reco steering box.

Hey Team_Dat, I had the same problem with my coupe but most of my problem was the drag link and tie rod ends, the joints were very worn, and I could wobble the steering wheel with out the tyres moving, but I could actually see the joint wobbling in it's cup.
Cheers Damo
