yea.. I just discovered yesterday that this poindexter had also removed the locking mechanism from the tailgate and sealed it shut with silastic. and the c*#t had been doing compression lockups and put the fan into the radiator. so theres going to be some work to do. anyone with any wagon parts?

To use the 1000 box, you have to fit the 1000 flywheel and clutch to the A12. The 1000 clutch is puny and will not cope with even a standard A14, and the same goes for the gearbox.

The 1000 gearbox has a smaller diametre input spline than the later A series boxes, so you cannot use an A12/14 clutch with that box.

The best thing to do is throw the 1000 motor, flywheel, clutch and box as far away as you can, and use the later stuff

And I think the firewall mod dattoman_1000 mentioned for the later gearbox is for clutch fork to trans tunnel/firewall clearance. That certainly was the case with my 1000 coupe with A14 and 120Y 4spd.

oops... That wouldnt by any chance be the wagon I bought on friday? the front of it is in pretty poor shape. one of the fenders is fibreglass (dont ask me how) and it is poorly fitted. and the other side has the sill cut out of it. there is a bit of rust in the passenger side front door aperture. the guy who had it is apparently a mechanic and tried doing up the motor by putting each cylinder at bottom dead center and using a hone.. he then wondered why the motor had no compression afterwards??

anyway I have been trying to get my sedan licensed for ages and now my needs have changed that I need to carry around more gear. I am going to pull off the good bits from the (sedan) and put them into the wagon. oh yea and the wagon also has a coupe steering wheel , gearknob and a 1200 gearbox and clutch. So the sedan (2door) may be up for sale semi complete soon. interior pretty much retrimmed or vgc, pretty good body, battery relocated to boot etc etc.

You'll need to make a small firewall mod to suit the 1200 clutch cable as the pull method is different.

Dattoman
Thats something i had not known before. I ran my 1000 box behind my 1200GX in the early days using a cut down 1000 flywheel & an A14 clutch.
The 1000 flywheel is lighter & i now suspect that the extra weight of the 1200 flywheel is added to the clutch face. This would have the effect of pushing the clutch further into the bellhousing. The 1000 flywheel has a shallow grove machined around the little clutch disc & i machined the whole face of the flywheel down to the base of this groove. This has the effect of pulling the clutch toward the engine by a small amount.
Whatever the actual reason, i was able to run the A14 clutch with the 1000 gearbox. I guess i just fluked it.

My original method of overcoming the clutch cable to firewall problem when i fitted the 5 speed was to simply slide a roughly machined up spacer over the adjustment thread part of the 1200 clutch cable to allow the clutch adjustment to be made. It slopped around in the hole like a di*k in a shirtsleve but it worked. For my KB10 i will machine a proper adapter from stainless hex barstock. It will be threaded & will screw in where the original 1000 cable went. I'm getting fussy in my old age.

Ill have to pull some strings :)

I would like it, for the price its a steal if its in good condition and its licenced too.

If i did get it i could keep it licenced, maybe he might drop the price ?

ill let you know how it goes.

Close, but no banana.
The A10 is directly interchangeable with the A12 from a Datsun 1200 car built from 1970 to '74. The A12a was not sold in Australia & the A12 that was used in the 120Y & the later Sunny has a number of changes on the right [Drivers] side, including a repositioned engine mount. The left side is good & a small mod is all that is required for the right to fit.

The best engine to use is the early A12 as it will allow you to keep the altenator on the left & the whole thing aviods the necessity to modify the engine mount & the wiring harness. If you can, use the 1000 sump as the 1200 sump sometimes touches the crossmember i'm told. I have had no problem myself.
It will be necessary to shorten the spigot of the 1000 gearbox input shaft as it's too long for the shorter hole in the 1200 crank. This assumes that you are using the 1000 gearbox.
If you DO use the 1200 engine, the 1000 clutch will be marginal, & to use the 1200 flywheel & clutch means that you will need to use a 1200 release bearing. More complexity.
Best to use the 1200 box as well, but use the 1000 gearlever.

The later carb should bolt onto the early manifold, but is calibrated to run on an engine with PCV, which the 1000 does not have. Going the other way, with a 1000 carb on a 1200 engine, which DOES have PCV, you might find that the mixture goes a bit little lean under some driving conditions.

The stock air cleaner usually rubs on the underside of the bonnet with a 1200 engine because this engine is a little taller than the A10.
Love your VB10 & it will reward you with years of fun.

depends whether it is an a12 out of a 1200 or an a12a out of a 120y. an A12 will fit straight in, but for an a12a you will have to make plates up for the engine mounts. Good luck with the 1000 man.

Im happy too now!!!!!! Yes an A12 will go straight in and you can use either gearbox...but if you use the A10 gearbox you will have to cut the shaft a few cm.....
How much are you geting it for....hope it is not the one in Tasmania that Im maybe getting...... If the boot stays up you will be lucky but look for rust on the guards...
Goodluck hope it is a good one and you get it!!!!!!!
