If you can come up with a chassis number, i should be able to date it. This number will be found stamped into the inner guard on the drivers side. It should start with B20-xxxxx

1974 Datsun 1000 ute?
I thought that the Datsun 1200 replaced it in 1970, or is it actually a Datsun 1200.

A pic would be nice.

I have 1000/1200/120Y centers in all housings, there is differint axel lengths.Bewere I have had one 1000 wagon with a differint spline on axel.
1000 ute had 46 to 1 and 1200 ute had 43 to 1,1200 and 120Y 4door 4speed was 41to 1,coupe got 39 to 1.Then you got the B/W diffs think thay were in the later 1200s come 120Y autos, one was 37 to 1 and another one was 39 to one.Ill go and have a look tomorow in the day light,I might be wrong on that last bit.

On same topic.....Can anyone recommend a good strong diff upgrade for a 1000 ute ?? Say, to handle around 120 rear wheel horsepower....

The 1200 rear axle assembly is wider, so fitting one, sedan or ute, to a Datsun 1000 is NOT really a proposition.
Like PDS said, the 1200ute diff is larger than passenger models.
The 1200 passenger diff is not "the same" as the 1000 one, but it is "interchangeable" The 1000 ratio is 4.375 to 1 for utes & vans & 4.11 to 1 for other models. All of them used an alloy third member housing.
The 1200 passenger models used an iron housing with a 3.9 to 1 ratio. Using this is recomended when upgrading to a 1200 or larger engine.

1200 ute diff is bigger,
1200 sedan centre will fit,
1200 axles are longer.

does anyone know if the datsun 1000 sedan diff is the same as the 1200 ute diff or 1200 sedan diff......can the centres be swapped.
Also, are the 1200 axles longer?
