Alloy hubs from mazda is what stevos 1000 might have with mazda 4 spot(or two?) calipers. Could you tell me more about these hubs if they need a caliper bracket?? Im thinking of using the SS commodore calipers and disks (if possible) or stock mazda stuff if better with 5 studs (114.3pcd x 5?)

Hey your daughter better be a crack driver to get into that mutant

I made my own , but have used Series 4 & 5 RX7 alloy hubs on a few projects for people. As for photos I'll dust off the car and get some posted..my plan was to wait till it was finished but at the rate I'm working on it these days my baby girl will be old enough to drive it when it's done !!!

Thats a nasty bore size! (and hp in turbo form that rx3 must have twisted cause it probably never saw such torque).

Any info on alloy hubs anyone?

The steering box isnt desperately heavy (not by todays standards) but when you set the engine back under the dash, the draglink gets in the way of the sump and pulley. It gets worse, when you lift all the suspension mounting points up into the chassis rails, you have to move the steering gear up as well, so the engine has to get even higher.
The escort rack goes in front of the crossmember, so bingo, tons of clearance for the pulley and sump, and you halve the number of sloppy linkages in the steering gear.

The biggest problem with the 240 is the steering box. It's a dodgy old thing on the circuit, the offsets and loads involved in running the 10 inch wide stickys load the steering arms up so much that I get movement in all kinds of odd places.
I cant bring myself to put a rack in it, and replace all the ball joints with rose joints, it'll just kill off the 'cool old groupB' aspect of it.

The FJ24's are 92 bore/88 stroke. They rev a lot better than the current breed of 'emissions motors', ie the SR, mitsi 4g, or nasty ol subaru things....
My 2.4 engine did a couple of passes in turbo form in an RX3, it was good for a 9.6.
Working out the numbers, it must've made around 610hp at the wheels.

Smac can we see pics of your PP 12a 1200??
I heard the escort racks are possible to fit and I agree they are fantastic for their gearing ratio and lighting quick response. Is the steering box that heavy????
Another forgotten aspect are the wheels and so far the lightest Ive come across are japanese F1 SSV 2 piece magnesium and alloy.

Alloy Hubs now thats what Ive been after but been told that the Aussie Super V8s have them and they often crack. Now that I dont know but Ive seen some on an early 924 porsche and they seem very strong since theyve been smacked around without the wheels on and dragged all over other carnage of the wreckers its in.
Anyone know about them? I mean porsche are road driven so they must expect bad potholes and so on...

Timbo's car was genuinely light and I firmly believe it could have been lighter still if it had'nt been destroyed.... It did'nt have a front crossmember or bottom arms as such, the pick up points were built into the chassis rails and the bottom arms were chromemoly tube. the steering box which is bloody heavy was replaced by an Escort rack. The inner guards were chopped out to the strut towers and a tube frame work supported the front guards, grille and spoiler. The front struts were Ford with integral steering arms and single mounting point all saving a heap of weight. The rear floor was cut out behind the rear crossmember and between the chassis rails and the rails were "C"ed. All the glass was replaced with Lexan. The tops of the doors were chopped off and the door handles shaved as well. There were a lot more things we discussed about trying to save weight which were never tried but have been incorporated into my long term project including alloy hubs, pedal box, radiator, calipers , strut tops and spring seats, coilover rear with alloy 4 link, carbon fibre panels and kevlar seat and a few more "secret" tweaks. I have wanted to build a 1200 shell with the inner roof panels and pillars removed. This could make the cage sit nice and snuggley in the cabin and save a pile of weight and a good cage design won't sacrifice strength either. I think a 500 kg coupe racer is very acheivable. If any one knows where I can find an alloy Lotus Cortina diff head I would love one for my Escort based diff...if you take a lot of little bits and add them together it makes a lot !!!

I read it in a waiting room somewhere but I think its the latest edition Zoom or similar (theres so many of these mags that come out its hard to remember where) However Id like to know what bore stroke they had and has anyone ever turboed an fj24? It would be a gtr killer in a well handling coupe.
I wonder why George fury went z18 instead of FJ???

Sounds like your coupe was amazingly light.

The standard 2 door datsun 1000 weighs 625 kgs but its been hard to find things to throw out of it and unless I go lexan the 550 mark wont come so easily. As its already a spartan little critter. Ive even contemplated going for a Suzuki GTI engine which is another 20kgs lighter but dont want to run pollution gear.
A rotary can get down to 96kgs with 5.5 kg flywheel, lightweight rotors and single weber 48ida and extractors (no heat exchanger) small alternator and alloy water pump and front housing and crank angle sensor with ignition computer but yes the noise of the things and the fact that there are many sharks giving them a bad rep cause of the nasty rebuilds performed to increase profits (all because with minimal seal replacements they dont show any signs of a bad workmanship until over 18, 000kms which is beyond the guarantee any builder will give.)
The other lightweigh engine is the March engine but to make one RWD is a hassle.
The GTI engine has the sierra box to bolt up to with seperate tailshaft going to transfer case.

Harry,
I had the SSS cornerweighted some years ago when I was racing it. This will be an interesting comparison for you because the car, apart from a full cage, kevlar Autosport seat, 5 spd c/r box and bigger front brakes is stock ( weightwise) heres the figures we finished with ( in lbs )
LF 466 RF 496
LR 453 RR 510
Now this is with the spare wheel still in (don't ask me why please! ) and half a tank of gas.
Divided by 2.2046 this gives 873 kgs and I weigh around 85 kgs
Cheers
Dave

Honest, the cage was overweight in my ol car, the wall thickness was way up on the minimum spec. (accounts for about 4kg).
It was on the Motorsport NZ scales too, so they shoulda been pretty close.
The lightest 1200 I ever saw was the Tony Marsh car, at 576kg, but it had an alloy cage.

The FJ24 shipped with 50mm Mikuni/Solex carbies.
They made 240hp in wetsump, endurance trim, or around 290 in drysump hand grenade form. There are a couple of guys running them on the speedway now, quoting around 330hp at huge RPM...

Love to see the article, anyone scanned it?
