I would strongly recommend 185/60/13's for the 13x6'' mag. This is the ideal setup for the street and what I used in my turbo car when I was racing it (Bridgestone Potenza RE71's ) and can assure you that they were fantastic as a road tyre and the car was certainly not undertyred.
I have recently purchased some 175/60/13 Bridgestone Potenza RE520S for the SSS which are quite frankly AWESUME and am the strong opinion that this is the ideal size for a normally aspirated strong 1200 (and 120Y)The beauty with this size is that it also sharpens up the fianl drive a bit and with the standard 3.9/1 every bit helps.Only problem with this size is getting them - they are only really availabe in R compound racing rubber.
Even with the 185's I have had rear guard clearance problems - especially on the left rear. I would imagine that trying to fit 205's into a lowered sedan would be out of the question without some serious guard pumping.

The wheels are of the "hotwire" variety, but i do not know who actually made them. They are fairly old & i have glass beaded one, then painted & polished it. Not an identification mark on it anywhere. They are 5-1/2" wide & the backspace is 4"

To fit the 205 tyres it was necessary to roll the flange where the chassis rail meets the inner part of the rear wheel housing, upwards. I also rolled the lip of the wheel arch upwards. No pumping of the body was done & the sidewalls touched only when i had two adult rear passengers & a bigish sort of a bump, or when i drove over very uneven terrain.

Once i had fitted the first set, i stuck with Pirelli P6's. They are great & i still have a new pair of the front ones. They don't make this tyre model anymore, but i'm sure that any of the major manufacturers produce a high quality product. Do not use any raised letter ot raised rib types as these widen the carcase & will cause problems.

The '33 coupe is in a thousand pieces, but i have some pictures of it that i took many years ago. It has been in storage for about 20 years. I will try to send you some.
I have only one scanned photo of the 1000 sedan, taken in December of 1980, so i will need to scan some more for you.
Chris

P.S.
Dodgeman, or Chris will suffice. The other reference is unfortunately associated with practices that i do not advocate.

Dodgey Man I would really like to see some pics of your cars , even your dodge.

On your 1000 sedan to fit the 205s did anything need to be done to the car?
Did they scrub? Did they fit inside the arches? What 13" wheels did you use?
What was the back spacing of these wheels?

I have used the 205/60/13's on the rear of my 1000 sedan for about 18 years with the matching 185's on the front. I went to the larger size, on the rears only, for a number of reasons that included increasing the overall gear ratio as well as filling up the rear wheel arches a little more.

I have driven that car for about 200,000 miles [320,000k] & i never had a moments concern in the wet as a result of tyre selection. From my own limited experience, i can say that these were the ideal size for MY CAR, with the 1200GX engine & 5 speed, & MY driving style.
The same wheels & tyre size will be going on my 1000 coupe.

I would advise against 205's unless you have a fairly stout motor in your 1200. I run 185/60 13's on my 1200 Vintage racer. The car never gets passed in the corners. It is putting out about 90 HP so I'm not likely to over power the rear wheels. Think of the wider tires as giant flywheels , every time you accelerate the motor has to get the extra mass moving. The wider tires also offer more rolling resistance which will further kill acceleration. You may actually gain a small amount of cornering speed but the car will also acclerate off the corner much slower. so it ends up a wash. Another thought is 205's on a 1500lb car may be dicey in the wet. There seems to be the misconception that big wide tires and ultra stiff suspension will make the car handle better when quite the contrary is the case. For road use I would stick with 185's , they will clear the fenders and the car will keep it's zippy feel that 1200's are known for.

The 186/60/13 is the correct size for road use on a 1200 or a 1000. The 205 is not a good choice.
For the rear, i have run 205/60/13's under my 1000 sedan for the last 18 years or so. They fit, they work, they are affordable.

When you're on a good thing,..............

205s fit the back without any mods if you have exactly the right wheel offset. I've never seen wheels with the right offset.

On the front 205s would be difficult to fit. 185s should fit on a variety of wheels.

I have 205's on my coupe, they fit perfectly but the front guards need to be pumped and lipped. Or I'm just going with flares.

It all depends on your offset

Cheers

Hi there, just wondering if anyone knows what the biggest width tyres are to fit under 1200. I've got these 13x6 sorta deep dish rims and wanna go like 205 or something but maybe thats too wide? or is it a case of visting a specialist and getting them to sort it? oh yeah its not lowered yet but I'm looking at a two or three inches soon. thanks!
