When I was about ten,I used to go with my Dad to Capital Motors to pick up new Datsuns 1200's,Patrols ect.
My Stepdad and Uncle both sold them new,so when it came for us three kids to get our first cars we all got 1200's.
I am now 37 and now drive an original 73 4door and all my mates reckon my 2 door sedan will be finished for my son to drive(he is 6 weeks old)I had better get cracking.

it seems ppl that have cool oldschool cars have gotten into then somehow by their parents, freinds family or whatever. i first got into cars when i was young as my dad was always doing stuff to his two morris minors, this led to datsun's as they were both a series powered. im sure at a young age we all knocked the old datto's but once u get to the age to appreciate why they are cool, and what makes them a good car it becomes an obsession.

tearup i tell u now, as u have many years before u can drive, start saving, dont follow what everyone else does. dont buy the latest ps2 games, ull want the money when ur datto comes along. i know there are thousands of dollars ive spent over the years i wish i had now. hopefully by 17 ull have more money than anyone u know and ull be the coolest guy at school and get all the chicks coz uve got a kickass datto.

I got into Datsuns when my stepfather bought two new Toyotaargh's in Blacktown [part of the greater Sydney metro area] He got a Corolla for mum & a Corona for himself.

The Corona had a problem with the gearbox from new that the dealer was not too keen to fix, so, in disgust, the Corona, at age 3 weeks, was traded in on a new Datsun 1600.
As part of the deal, he ended up starting up a new Datsun dealership, in partnership with the salesman who sold him the 1600 in late '69 or early 1970.
This was D & G motors in Blacktown & the Toyotaargh dealer had a competitor that he didn't have before. He should have fixed the gearbox because D & G took a lot of sales away from them.
I bought his 1200 ute [a real one as it was a '71 model] with 32,000 miles on it after he retired, & drove it for many years.
My stepfather was the "D" part of D & G,... for "Daniels."

I got my first Datsun in 1980. It's the '68 Datsun 1000 four door that i still have now.

sunny, they are such an awersome car to paddock bash because they dont have the colectabilty of a 1200 but have the industructable a series engine in them which are almost impossible to blow up.

Yes, many of us can thank our families for "raising us right". My dad had a 1970 Datsun 521 pickup, but later when I was 17 he surprised me with a '72 Datsun 1200 -- then only ten-year-old!(picture). I wasn't immediately impressed with it, but over time came to realize what a special car it was ...

Sounds like you were raised correctly! When I got my first car at 16 years old, a 72 Datsun 1200 coupe, I started working on it immediately. It had a 4 point roll bar, A12 w/32-36 Weber DGV, and 2.25" exhaust w/glasspack muffler. When my youngest brother was born and I got my license at 17, I took him cruising with me almost every day, he loved it! We've done that for years now and all he talks is cars (mostly Datsun 1200) and now he is 9 years old and knows more about cars than most 25 year olds, it's awesome! He can't wait for me to come home and take him racing or cruising in my 69 Buick Station Wagon....neither can I!!!
